This fort, located on a coral ridge at the harbor’s entrance, was built to protect the Portuguese settlers on Africa’s East Coast. It has witnessed numerous conflicts among the various groups that once inhabited Mombasa. The Omani Arabs besieged the fort from 1696 to 1698. Between 1837 and 1895, it served as barracks for soldiers. When the British declared a protectorate on July 1, 1895, the fort was transformed into a prison. Today, Fort Jesus stands as a significant historical monument in East Africa.
