Join me as I embark on a thrilling 4-day trek up Mt. Meru, a journey that promises breathtaking vistas, encounters with African wildlife, and the ultimate summit challenge. Discover the untamed beauty of Arusha National Park and the allure of this majestic mountain.
The Call of the Wild: Setting Foot on Mt. Meru
As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, the allure of Mt. Meru was irresistible. Nestled within the heart of Arusha National Park, this trek promised not only a physical challenge but also a chance to immerse myself in the vibrant tapestry of African wildlife. The journey began with an early morning drive from Arusha to the Momella Gate, where the anticipation was palpable. The porters busied themselves with preparations, while I took a moment to absorb the surroundings. The air was crisp, and the landscape was alive with the sounds of nature.
The first day of the trek was akin to a walking safari. Accompanied by an armed ranger, our group set off on a trail that meandered through the park’s diverse ecosystems. Giraffes gracefully strode in the distance, while zebras and antelopes grazed nearby. The sight of a buffalo herd, with their imposing presence, was a reminder of the untamed beauty of this land. As we crossed the Ngarenanyuki River and approached a cascading waterfall, I felt a profound connection to the environment. Arriving at Miriakamba Hut, the day’s exertions were rewarded with a hot meal and the promise of a breathtaking sunset.
Ascending the Heights: From Miriakamba to Saddle Hut
The second day dawned with a sense of purpose. After a hearty breakfast, we embarked on a steep ascent along the ridge of the saddle. The trail offered panoramic views of the Mt. Meru Crater and the Ash Tray, each step bringing us closer to the clouds. The air grew thinner, but the thrill of the climb was invigorating. Along the way, we encountered more wildlife, their presence a testament to the park’s rich biodiversity.
Reaching Saddle Hut, I was faced with a choice: rest or push further to Little Mt. Meru. Opting for the latter, I joined a few fellow adventurers for an acclimatization hike. The effort was rewarded with sweeping vistas and a deeper appreciation for the mountain’s majesty. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we gathered for an early dinner, knowing that the summit attempt awaited us in the early hours of the morning.
The Summit Beckons: A Midnight Ascent
The call to adventure came at 00:30, with tea and biscuits to fuel our resolve. By 1:30am, we were on the move, headlamps cutting through the darkness as we navigated the steep path to Rhino Point. The climb was challenging, each step a testament to our determination. As we reached Cobra Point, the first light of dawn began to paint the sky, illuminating the rocky ridge that lay ahead.
The final push to the summit was a scramble, a test of both physical and mental endurance. But as the sun rose, casting its golden glow over the landscape, the reward was beyond words. Standing atop Mt. Meru, with the Ash Tray and the distant silhouette of Mt. Kilimanjaro in view, was a moment of pure exhilaration. The descent to Saddle Hut was swift, buoyed by the euphoria of the summit. Returning to Miriakamba Hut, the day’s adventures were recounted over dinner, each story a testament to the mountain’s allure.
The final descent to Momella Gate was a reflective journey, the forest and meadows offering a serene backdrop to the memories forged on the mountain. As I returned to Arusha, the experience of Mt. Meru lingered in my mind, a reminder of the wild beauty that Africa holds.
