Highlights
  • Basilika St. Michael - The town of Mondsee, with its famous St. Michael’s Wedding Basilica, lies in the beautiful countryside between the lakes Mondsee and Irrsee. This basilica is famous for the wedding of Maria and Captain von Trapp in the world-famous musical To the Sound of Music. Since then, more than 400 weddings have taken place here. The 12th century basilica is the symbol of Mondsee and one of the largest Gothic churches in Austria. The church received its extraordinarily rich decoration at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. However, the history of this place goes back much further. Originally, the Mondsee monastery stood here, founded in 748. After 800, the so-called “Mondsee Matthew”, the oldest translation of the Bible into German, was written in the monastery. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1791, the building was converted into a castle and is now a hotel. The lake is considered one of the warmest in Salzkammergut area.

A lovely way to celebrate a special day. - Michael was an excellent driver and very flexible with our requests. The private tour we booked included Mondsee. However we had already toured Mondsee the day before. He suggested we visit Berchtesgadener Land district of Bavaria in Germany. It was absolutely lovely and the perfect way to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary!

Bernd is the Best! - I could not possibly recommend our driver/tour guide, Bernd more. He made our trip incredible from the second he picked us up at our dock (Viking River Cruise, which got changed due to river levels. I contacted company and they made changes with no problems, it was seamless) to the second he dropped us off. We saw so much more than the excursion the ship provided. We figured we would probably never be in Salzburg again and really wanted to maximize our time and with Bernie, we did. We saw so many of the scenes from the Sound of Music, the lake area, the main street in Salzburg, the best sausage sandwich we ever had to the chapel where Silent Night was written. Bernie was so knowledgeable about everything we saw and had an answer to every question. We will be using this company again and again.
