• Basilika St. Michael - Nestled in the scenic landscape between Mondsee and Irrsee lakes, the town of Mondsee is home to the renowned St. Michael’s Wedding Basilica. This basilica gained fame as the wedding venue for Maria and Captain von Trapp in the globally acclaimed musical, “The Sound of Music.” Since then, it has hosted over 400 weddings. Dating back to the 12th century, the basilica is a symbol of Mondsee and ranks among the largest Gothic churches in Austria. It received its lavish decoration at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, though its history extends much further. Originally, the site was home to the Mondsee monastery, established in 748. After 800, the “Mondsee Matthew,” the oldest German translation of the Bible, was penned here. Following the monastery’s dissolution in 1791, the building was transformed into a castle and now serves as a hotel. The lake is known as one of the warmest in the Salzkammergut region.

The archaeological discoveries around Hallstatt are so important that they have named a period of the “Hallstatt culture.” These can be viewed in the local museum.
