Mount Profitis Ilias, situated less than five kilometers (3.1 miles) from the village of Pyrgos, is the island’s tallest peak. At its summit stands the monastery of the same name. Established in 1711, the Profitis Ilias Monastery is one of the island’s oldest and a beautiful example of Cycladic architecture.
- Red Beach - Red Beach is a breathtaking, vibrant, and colorful destination. Its name perfectly captures the experience awaiting visitors. Majestic red cliffs in the background and reddish sand with black pebbles along the shore create a distinctive landscape, highlighting the island’s volcanic origins. The best view of the beach is from the approach and departure. From the cliff top, there is a stunning view of the beach, making it an ideal spot for photography.
The beach area is a relatively narrow strip, occasionally covered with decaying sea grass, but swimming in the sea is delightful. However, the sea is rocky and steep for entry and exit. A small bay formed by rocks is generally calm, except when the south winds blow, but the waves do not deter visitors from enjoying a swim. Umbrellas and sun loungers are available for guests, and there is space to lay towels. Due to its small size, it can become quite crowded.
- Megalochori - Traditional Village - Explore the traditional village of Megalochori, stroll through the narrow streets, and discover local charms.
- Akrotiri Archaeological Site - Explore significant prehistoric ruins from the Aegean era.
-
Emporio - Emporio, meaning “trade” in Greek, highlights the village’s historical economic significance as a trade center. With its well-preserved architecture, the settlement exudes a medieval charm.
The village resembles a fortress, built to protect its residents from pirate raids. Buildings were constructed side by side to enhance defense. Once piracy was no longer a threat, the village expanded to its current layout.
In the heart of Emporio is Kasteli, a unique castle town. Its walls were made of cement mixed with volcanic materials. The streets are narrow, as are the windows and doors of the buildings. Kasteli is a unified fortified settlement. The area remains inhabited, and locals strive to maintain it in excellent condition. - Perissa Black Sand Beach - While Santorini is not renowned for its beaches, Perissa Beach is a delightful surprise. Perissa is a stunning beach with black volcanic sand, ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. Located on Santorini’s southeastern coast, it stretches at the base of the imposing cape Mesa Vuno, which juts into the sea. At the mountain’s summit lies the ancient city of King Thiras. Perissa is one of the island’s most cosmopolitan beaches, extending for miles. It merges with Perivolos Beach, forming a stretch over 7 kilometers long. The water is crystal clear, with a gentle slope and a beautiful hue. The coarse black sand is pleasant to walk on and sparkles, though it can become hot in the summer.
