Explore Monreale, situated a mere 5 km away from Palermo and elevated at 310 m on Mount Caputo’s hill. The journey will commence from the town’s emblem, the cathedral, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015.
The Cathedral is a remarkable architectural marvel of the 12th century, blending different styles from Northern Europe architecture, Romanesque art, and Arabic art. Externally, it is ornately decorated with two bronze doors, one by Bonanno da Pisa and the other by Barisano di Trani who also crafted the Ravello door and the Trani cathedral.
Within, it is lit by stunning gold mosaics that peak in the Christ Pantocrator in the apsidal basin, representing the pinnacle of figurative art.
The excursion progresses with a visit to the monastery and the adjacent cloister in the ancient Benedictine monastery, as well as the belvedere offering a view of the valley and the golden orange and citrus groves.
