A great way to see SA's must-sees! - We got to travel the country with a highly experienced driver Tim who has been working for African Sun Safaris for over 5 years. He knows the trip like the back of his hand and laid out a clear itinerary, often with a few different options depending on our preferences, every day. We had a youngish kid with us - 8 years old - and it was not possible to find a larger tour group willing to accept children under 12 so this worked well for us. Some things I might suggest as improvements for the future: ---More frequent communication with guests prior to tour start to make them feel comfortable and set expectations; we paid the (rather substantial) amount of money and then heard nothing back for months - we ended up emailing to try to get confirmation (and alleviate our fears that we'd been scammed). We are luckily frequent travelers but less experienced travelers from the US would have been completely spooked by the silence. ---Set a quality standard for the accommodations - in most cases our hotel rooms were nice (those in the Southern Sun and Garden Court families of hotels) but there were some below-standard accommodations I would not wish to see again. ---Permanently alter the itinerary 1) to go to the Central Drakensburg, not the Lower and 2) to not go to Mthatha and instead do the Panoramic Route in the northern Kruger area - we did this and it was amazing. Mthatha is not worth seeing and there is more than enough Mandela history on the rest of the tour to skip the museum there. ---Ensure tour guides are highly knowledgeable about the history and interesting facts of the locations along the way; there are many hours of driving on this tour and we hoped to learn a lot about South Africa from our tour guide.

A great sample of all that South Africa has to offer! - There was below average communication leading up to our trip. We had to specifically ask what our hotel accommodations would be and couldn’t arrange a pick up spot/time until 48 hours before tour started. That was a little informal for a huge international trip and I think a welcome letter 2 weeks out or something giving a run down of everything would be a huge improvement. Once the tour started, it was a great time. I was pleased with our driver who accommodated both the published itinerary and individual requests. He had good knowledge of the roads and was very helpful solving any issues. The accommodations are a mix of fancy hotels, cabins, and Bed & Breakfast type places. Most had air conditioning and the beds were comfortable. It was a good experience and I recommend visiting South Africa. The people are friendly and the sights are breathtaking. Having the flexibility of a private tour compared to being on a bus tour is a huge upside. Just be aware of minimal communication with the company in the lead up to the trip. Once it starts… you won’t be disappointed.
