The Monte Sant’Angelo guided excursion will primarily focus on the historic center, the fortress, and the sanctuary dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. This, along with the Puglia-based Longobardian routes, achieved the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

The path commences from the fortress, originally a Byzantine construct associated with antiquity of prior to 1000 AD. This structure was later enhanced by an appendage known as the Tower of the Giants, notable with its impressive 18 meter height and 3 meter wall thickness, and saw further expansion by the Normans, Swabians and Aragonese.

Next, the sanctuary of Saint Michael’s outside presents the opportunity to appreciate the commanding octagonal tower, a creation of Charles I of Anjou, seemingly inspired by Castel del Monte.

The exploration proceeds to the internal part of the cave, a revered place of worship for Saint Michael the Archangel since the fifth century.

The journey concludes with a trip to the museum and lapidarium located within the basilica.
