-
Entrance Station - The park’s Entrance Station is just ahead. After passing through, continue driving straight along Rim Drive.
-
Tomichi Point - After parking, walk to the overlook and take in the view. Listen to the stories in the Learn More section to discover more about the view and its history.
-
Pulpit Rock Overlook - Enter the parking area ahead and follow the trail to the overlook. This easy trail takes only two minutes and offers a fantastic view of the Gunnison River.
-
Warner Point Nature Trail - At over 8,000 feet, it’s the highest point on the park’s south rim. Get those cameras ready!
-
Gunnison River - The story of this canyon’s formation continues beyond the Laramide Orogeny. The next chapter involves fire and water. First, the fire:
About 30 million years ago, massive volcanoes erupted on either side of the fractured earth. The same tectonic pressure that cracked the surface caused this volcanic chaos. The ash and lava covered this region and filled the crack.
-
Cross Fissures View - This half-mile loop is directly across from the notorious Narrows that marked the end for Kolb and Pelton and many others. Be sure to take the easy 15-minute walk to the edge if you want to see where they met their fate.
-
South Rim Visitor Center - Our next story is actually behind the Visitor Center. When ready, exit the car and walk through the building.
-
Gunnison River Expeditions/ North Rim Hunt Club - Gunnison and his troops arrived here to secure a railroad route in the 1850s. Everything was going smoothly—until Gunnison reached the canyon we’ll soon see.
-
Devils Lookout - This easy, half-mile trail ends at an overlook directly above the roaring whitewater of the Gunnison.
-
Chasm View Trail - Here, two vistas are accessible. The first is right next to the turnout: Chasm View. The trail to Chasm View is only a few hundred feet, but it’s steep! It’s highly recommended to try it. It’s also a great spot for watching rock climbers on the north wall of the canyon.
-
Painted Wall - Igneous intrusions occur when hot magma is injected into rock but doesn’t have enough pressure to erupt. Instead, it gets trapped in the crevices and solidifies. These intrusions formed over a billion years ago.
-
Cedar Point - The trail to this overlook is easy, just under half a mile, and takes about 15 minutes to complete. Along the way, you’ll see plenty of Gambel oaks, which thrive on the canyon rim. It’s also a great place to spot wildflowers in the spring! If visiting, keep an eye out for those lignotubers mentioned earlier.
-
Sunset View - Sunset View is just ahead. Turn into the parking lot on the right and follow the very short path to the overlook. This is a must-see, even if it’s not sunset time yet!
