Highlights
  • Underground Hospital and Museum - Uncover the story behind Australia’s first and only underground hospital on a fully guided tour with an experienced local guide. Learn of the extraordinary efforts made by local miners who volunteered their time during construction. Explore the four tunnels, fitted out to resemble the 1942 original layout. Step inside the heritage-listed Tent House, a solution to the 1930s housing shortage in Mount Isa during the early mining boom years.

Find out how a common tent was converted into a Tent House; an adaptation of materials to suit a hot, dry climate. The building currently housing the Beth Anderson Museum has a story of its own. It began life as a hospital in Kuridala, a heritage-listed abandoned mining town in the Cloncurry Shire. It was dismantled and transported to Mount Isa in 1931. Today, visitors to the Beth Anderson Museum can view an impressive collection of antique medical equipment. Enjoy complimentary tea or coffee and traditional Anzac biscuit on the veranda.

What an absolute gem! A must do! - What a great tour. Something so different and a great way to find out some of our unknown WWII history as well as the history of Mt Isa. We did the lamp light tour and the added bonus was it was a lovely spot to watch the sunset while waiting to start the tour. Will definitely visit again and such good value. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers.

Fantastic for anyone interested in history - Great to find out more about this amazing story. The restoration is very sensitive and gives a sense of what it was like in the 1940s. Very clever, moving use of AV and volunteer guide knew her stuff!
