Day Trip from Fez: Explore UNESCO Sites, Volubilis and Meknes

Discover two UNESCO sights in one day: the unearthed Roman city at Volubilis and the Imperial City of Meknes.

Duration: 7 hours

Highlights
  • Volubilis - Your first stop will be the ruined Roman city of Volubilis. French archaeologists began excavating Volubilis in the early 20th century, though half of the immense sight still remains beneath centuries of topsoil. Marvel at the famous sights, like the basilica, the triumphal arc, and the many palaces with their exquisite mosaics. The tour of Volubilis can be done either with or without a local guide.

Next you will make a quick stop in the adjacent small town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Perched atop a hill overlooking Volubilis, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun houses the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I (745-791), the first Arab king of Morocco. During your stop in Moulay Idriss Zerhoun you will go to a panoramic view point, visit the town center, and get lunch, a snack, or a beverage.

Youur last stop will be the mighty walled Imperial City of Meknes. Smaller in comparison to the other Moroccan Imperial Cities, Meknes held the status of capital of Morocco for only 55 years during the reign of the infamous king Moulay Ismail (1634-1727). Still, Meknes’s old city offers a trove of sights for a curious visitor: Moulay Idriss’s massive stables, capacious granary, and cavernous underground prison. You will also visit Moulay Idriss’s mausoleum (one of the only mosques in Morocco open to tourists), the monumental Mansour Gate, the covered food market, and the El Hidem Square.

Once finished with this busy day of sightseeing, you will take the highway back to Fez. You will drop you off at your hotel in the late afternoon/evening.

Day trips with Omega - We did 2 trips with Omega. One to Volubilis and the other one way to Chefchaouen. On both these trips our driver was Mohammed Cherfaoui . Mohammed was an excellent driver. He is a gentleman and has great knowledge of the area and its history. I would highly recommend Mohammed.

Great day trip to Volubilis and Meknes - We were accompanied on our trip by Mohammed. He took very good care of us, knew a lot about the country and the culture, showed us nice places and always took the trouble to give us a nice day!

Great day out! - Our driver Mohammed had great English and provided a lot of information along the way. He was very friendly and happily answered all our questions. There was no pressure to attend anything and he took us to a good restaurant which had delicious food - we had the option to go to another restaurant if we preferred. He was very flexible and waited almost three hours while we explored Volubilis. I would highly recommend Omega Tours.

Personable and Excellent Safe Driving - We did an all day trip with Mohammed and had a great time. We did a quick coffee stop in a village (with a bunch of stork nests) for a bit of a more local experience. The drive was beautiful rolling farm land with mountain views. The Roman mosaics at Volulbils were awesome. As others have said, it's hot out there.

Wonderful day out: Volubilis, Moulay Idriss & Meknes / Beautiful day in Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes - We went to Volubilis, Moulay Idfriss and Meknes with Hicham and a new guide, Abdelkarim who came for training. We had already done tours with Hicham (Chefchaouen and part of Fez), so he knew what we wanted and what we did not want. We wanted a genuine immersion in Morocco, without being taken on a commercial tour. And we got it! It rained for all of that day, so Volubilis was muddy: be warned, and take good walking shoes. After a wonderful visit, we traveled just a few more kilometers to Moulay Idriss where all 6 of us (family 4 + 2 guides whom we invited) ate together in a typical restaurant which Hicham recommended to us. A tasty barbecue for 6 at 350 Dh (about 35 €): that is good value for money. Thank you Hicham! We then drove a few more kilometers to Meknes where we visited the Mausoleum then the town itself. I was struggling with a calf injury, so went instead to the beautiful music museum leaving my partner and her children to visit the medina. I thoroughly enjoyed the museum and can recommend it, particularly to anyone interested in traditional music. By the end of the day, our new guide, Abdelkarim was feeling more at ease and opening up more. He told us that we would be traveling with him the next day to Bhalil and Sefrou, his home town, but more of that later. We visited Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes with Hicham and a new guide, Abdelkarim, who joined us in training. We had already done outings with Hicham (Chefchauen and part of Fez) so he knew what we wanted and what we didn't want. We were looking for an authentic immersion in Moroccan culture, without commercial visits, and we got it! It rained all day so Volubilis was muddy: be warned and bring good walking shoes. After a very nice visit, we traveled the few kilometers that separated us from Moulay Idriss where we had lunch together (the 4 of us plus the 2 guides that we invited) in a typical restaurant that Hicham recommended to us. Excellent grills for 6 people at 350 Dh: a very good price, thank you Hicham. We then continued to Meknes where we first visited the very beautiful mausoleum before heading into town. For my part, I had a calf injury, so I chose to visit the magnificent music museum while my partner and her children left for the medina. I loved this museum, and I highly recommend it to those interested in traditional music. At the end of the day, our new guide, Abdelkarim, was more at ease with us and he told us that it would be his turn to accompany us the next day to Bhalil and Sefrou, his hometown, but that's another story!

beautiful excursions - Beautiful trips around Fez. Our guide Mohammed has put together a complete, balanced and exciting program for us. I thank him here for his kindness, his good humor and his thoughtfulness. He was not a driver but the driver of our group

2 days of activity - We left for two days with Mohamed: Day 1, visit to a wine estate near Meknes (Domaine de la Zouina), Mohamed waited for us for the visit and then the tasting which we recommend! Then took us for coffee with a view of the city of Meknes Day 2: Ifrane, forest next to Azrou, Middle Atlas It was just perfect! I recommend 100% and especially special mention for Mohammed who is unfailingly patient and very kind and who was keen to show us and explain his region! THANKS !

Very flexible with friendly, informative and professional driver - I’m not going to say anything about Volubilis as a site since we had researched it beforehand and knew we wanted to visit it. Yes, it was as fascinating as we expected. But I’m so glad we chose this particular excursion. The thing about Omegatour private day trip to Volubilis and Meknes is that they offer total flexibility and are focused on the satisfaction of the client. For example, the stop at Volubilis was the most important to us. The driver told us to take as much time as we needed and just text him when we were ready to continue. We spent about 3 hours there. We also wanted to do an extra thing at the end of the tour and our driver immediately communicated with his manager Mostafa, and they were able to make it work for a reasonable extra. I am sure the shared tour is great too but you might be placed in a group with interests different than yours. This trip is also not one of those that will stop at shops known to the driver. In fact our driver said “you can’t mix culture with shopping”. Of course, you will have plenty of shopping opportunities at the Meknes Medina if that’s what you want. But you will be free to wonder and shop wherever you want and eat wherever you prefer. You can, of course, get recommendations but will not be taken to specific stops for that purpose. Our driver was Hicham. He modestly says that he speaks “a little English”. Don’t believe him. His English is great. He was very informative, very passionate about sharing his culture and very welcoming. After a while, without realizing it, I was feeling as if I was with family. Well, in fact by the end of the night, and thanks to Hicham, I was the brother of a dromedary…but that’s a story for another time.

Comfortable tour - We are very happy and satisfied with the tour. Our driver, Mr Mohamed, is very punctual. He gave us valuable information about Morocco culture and history. He is very considerate and explain the surroundings to us attentively. We appreciate his time spent with us. Most importantly, Mohamed is a careful driver. We had a very comfortable ride throughout the tour.

Great driver. A guide was needed. - The driver was very correct, friendly. 10/10. But the design of the excursion would have deserved the highest rating if they had accompanied us, for example, through Meknes, even through the ruins of Volubilis. Finally a great driver but not a guide as it would have been 10.
