This town is a significant spiritual site in the country and a place of pilgrimage, as it houses the tomb of Moulay Idriss, a notable Moroccan saint from the late 8th century and a great-grandson of the prophet Mohammed. Non-Muslim tourists often overlook the town, with their closest experience being a photograph taken from nearby Volubilis. Although access to the green-tiled shrine is limited, the numerous narrow streets leading to viewpoints over the valley towards Volubilis make a brief visit worthwhile.
Moulay Idriss to Volubilis and Fez Departing Moulay Idriss for the short 4km drive to the World Heritage Site of Volubilis, there are several spots to capture photographs of the town. Volubilis is home to the largest and best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, especially renowned for its exquisite mosaic floors.

The journey from Fes to Volubilis begins by picking you up from your place of stay in Fez at a convenient time for you. From there, we embark on a 1-hour drive westward towards the Imperial city of Meknes. As we traverse the plain, you’ll see large expanses of vineyards that yield high-quality wine, a sizeable portion of which is shipped to France. You’ll have roughly three hours to roam around Meknes, taking in the widespread souks, interesting historical sites, and grabbing lunch. Around 1700, Moulay Ismail designated Meknes as Morocco’s capital; his tomb and the Rouah, stables capable of housing over 12,000 horses, along with Place el-Hedim, the key pedestrian zone in the Medina, are definitely worth a stopover. Meknes’ souks offer ample exploration space compared to Fez, making the city a more laid-back place to discover.
