The Selous Game Reserve, found in the southern region of Tanzania, spans an impressive 54,600 km2, making it the grandest Game Reserves across Africa. This reserve derives its name from Sir Frederick Selous, a renowned big game hunter and pioneer in conservation, hailing from England. He lost his life in 1917, battling the Germans at Behobeho within the boundaries of his territory amid the First World War. Owing to its vast biodiversity and pristine landscape, the Selous Game Reserve was distinguished as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
Established in the year 1964, the Mikumi National Park initially stretched across 1070 square kilometers. It saw its boundaries widen in 1975, to encompass the present area of 3,230 square kilometers. Lying to the North of the esteemed Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi Park stands as the fifth most extensive National Park in Tanzania.
