Situated at the base of the Uluguru Mountains ECoordinates in Tanzania, Kimboza Forest is a lowland forest that stretches up to the neighboring hills and is crossed by the large Ruvu River. The forest is interspersed with grand rock outcrops and is dotted with a number of permanent small brooks. The remarkable biodiversity of the forest, including diverse endemic flora and fauna species, makes it a significant conservation zone. Many medicinal plants found in the wild within Kimboza Forest Reserve are utilized by the local population.
Kimboza Forest Reserve was founded in 1964 and houses at least 226 vertebrate species that include 52 amphibians and 174 mammals. It is considered the most species-rich and crucial lowland forest on limestone in Africa. The reserve is notably important for the conservation of the critically endangered turquoise gecko (Lygodactylus williamsi), which is found only in two places in Tanzania.
