The mini Serengeti The vast expanses and rich fauna of the Mkata Floodplain make it the celebrated heart of Mikumi. Frequently observed species include Elephant, Giraffe, Zebra, Antelope, Wildebeest, Eland, Crocodile, Hippo, and Baboon. With some luck, visitors might spot a Lion, and with even greater fortune, a Leopard might be seen. The area hosts over 300 species of birds such as the saddle bill stork, hammerkop, malachite kingfisher, lilac breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw, battler eagle, and others. An additional highlight is the Hippo Pools, offering a chance to observe hippos as they bask and exhale loudly in proximity.
