Sailing into Serenity: A Dolphin Dance in Fuerteventura
Drawn by the allure of the ocean and the promise of encountering dolphins, I embarked on a sailing adventure from Morro Jable. Join me as I recount a day filled with marine wonders and serene beauty.
Setting Sail from Morro Jable
The anticipation was palpable as I was picked up from my hotel by Pietr, our gracious host and captain for the day. The drive to Morro Jable was filled with excitement, knowing that soon I would be embarking on a sailing adventure that promised encounters with some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. Upon arrival, Pietr’s wife welcomed us aboard their modern and well-maintained yacht, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42.2, where we were invited to store our belongings safely and offered a refreshing drink of our choice.
As a marine biologist, the ocean has always been my second home, and the prospect of spotting dolphins and perhaps even whales was exhilarating. After a thorough safety briefing, we set sail, leaving the picturesque harbor behind. The gentle sway of the yacht and the salty breeze were calming, yet the thrill of the unknown lay ahead as we ventured into the vast blue.
Dancing with Dolphins
The journey to find the dolphins was serene, with Pietr expertly navigating the yacht and communicating with other boats to pinpoint the dolphins’ location. The ocean was calm, a perfect day for sailing, though I would advise those prone to seasickness to take precautions. After about 50 minutes, we reached our destination, and the sight was nothing short of magical.
Pilot dolphins surrounded our yacht, their sleek bodies gliding effortlessly through the water. There must have been at least 20 visible, with many more beneath the surface. We slowed our pace, allowing these magnificent creatures to approach us, and for the next half hour, we were entranced by their playful antics. As a scientist, observing these intelligent beings in their natural habitat was a profound experience, one that reminded me of the delicate balance of marine ecosystems.
A Secluded Bay Retreat
Reluctantly, we began our journey back to the coast, the ride a bit choppier but invigorated by a lovely breeze. We anchored in a secluded bay near the harbor, a perfect spot for a refreshing swim or simply to bask in the sun. Lunch was served on board, a delightful spread of fresh Canarian products, including potatoes with mojo sauce, hams, cheese, and salads, accompanied by a selection of drinks.
The tranquility of the bay offered a moment to reflect on the day’s adventures, the beauty of Fuerteventura from the sea, and the joy of sharing this experience with fellow travelers. As we sailed back to the harbor, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such natural wonders and the seamless blend of relaxation and excitement that the day had offered.
Pietr’s skillful handling of the yacht made the entire journey feel effortless, and his and his wife’s hospitality ensured that every detail was taken care of. This sailing trip was not just an excursion but a journey into the heart of the ocean, a reminder of why I fell in love with the sea in the first place. For anyone visiting the south of Fuerteventura, this is an experience not to be missed, a chance to connect with nature and discover the island from a unique perspective.
