- Mosfellsbaer - Begin your adventure with a cup of coffee or latte at a charming bakery in Mosfellsbaer, just 15 minutes from Reykjavik. Prepare for a day filled with Iceland’s highlights on a day tour from Reykjavik.
- Thingvellir National Park - Our first stop is the breathtaking Thingvellir National Park, where you can witness the vast gap between the Eurasian and American continental plates along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This geological activity, which began around 20 million years ago, continues to cause volcanic eruptions and earthquakes across Iceland. However, there hasn’t been an eruption here for two thousand years!
Thingvellir holds great significance for Icelanders as the site of the Althingi, the national Parliament, from 930AD until the 18th century. Laws were made, disputes settled, and festivals celebrated here. Iceland declared independence from Denmark at Thingvellir in 1945, and it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.
- Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths - Next, we pass through the quaint village of Laugarvatn, located by a beautiful lake of the same name in a geothermally active area. The locals even use the hot steam to bake rye bread in the ground!
- Geysir - We then arrive at the Haukadalur Geothermal area, home to Geysir, the namesake of all geysers worldwide. The largest geysers here are Geysir and Strokkur, with Strokkur erupting every few minutes, sometimes reaching heights of 30 meters.
Strokkur is renowned for its power and beauty, erupting reliably to heights of up to 30 meters every few minutes. Streams of super-heated water flow around, leaving colorful residues. While in the Geysir area, you can also grab lunch, snacks, or souvenirs at the nearby service station.
- Gullfoss Waterfall - Our journey continues to Gullfoss, the “golden waterfall.” Along the way, we pass remote upland farms, often home to more Icelandic horses than people. You might even get a chance to greet the horses if they’re near the fences.
Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most beloved natural wonders. This double drop waterfall cascades over 30 meters, creating a spectacular sight as millions of gallons of water crash into a narrow ravine. On sunny days, rainbows often appear, thanks to the constant spray. The waterfall is fed by glacial meltwater from the Langjokull glacier, 40km into the Highlands, leading to the Hvita (White) river, with the flow doubling in summer. Several viewing platforms are available, though some are closed in winter.
- Kerid Crater - As we head back to Reykjavik via a different route, we pass Reykholt, known for its geothermally-heated greenhouses. Our final sightseeing stop is a bonus, as the “classic” Golden Circle usually includes only three famous stops.
We offer an extra treat by visiting Kerid, a 55m deep and 270m wide volcanic crater adorned with red earth and green mosses, and featuring a turquoise-blue mineral water lake. You can even walk down a pathway to the crater’s bottom for a closer look.
- Hveragerdi - On our return to Reykjavik, you’ll see the rolling farmlands of the South Coast and the geothermal areas around Hveragerdi, known for its numerous greenhouses and horse farms.
- The Geothermal Energy Exhibition - On our way back to Reykjavik, you’ll also see rugged lava fields as we ascend the Hellisheidi mountain pass, and a geothermal power plant with superheated steam plumes rising into the air.
