A Last-Minute Adventure

Our family trip to Iceland was filled with excitement and anticipation, but as any seasoned traveler knows, plans can change in an instant. When our Golden Circle tour was unexpectedly canceled due to weather, we found ourselves scrambling for a new adventure. Enter the Icelandic Horse Trek at Laxnes Horse Farm in Mosfellsbær. It was a spontaneous decision, but one that turned out to be a highlight of our trip.

We were promptly picked up by the farm owner’s son at bus stop #6 for our 10 am tour. The drive to the farm was filled with chatter and laughter as we speculated about what awaited us. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the owner himself, who helped us gear up with helmets and warm suits. The kids were thrilled to be part of the process, and I could see their excitement building as we headed to the barn to meet our equine companions.

The moment we stepped into the barn, we were enveloped by the comforting scent of hay and the gentle sounds of horses. Each of us was paired with a horse that matched our personalities perfectly. I was introduced to Sol, a beautiful mare with a gentle demeanor, while my husband was paired with the calm and steady Loki. Our kids were matched with equally friendly horses, and their eyes sparkled with delight.

As we set off on our trek, I was amazed at how intuitive these Icelandic horses were. They seemed to know the path by heart, and their sure-footedness made the ride feel safe and enjoyable. The scenery was breathtaking, with snow-capped mountains and serene streams adding to the magic of the experience. Sol, my horse, had a charming habit of stopping for a sip of water at every stream, much to the amusement of my family.

The ride lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes, and it was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. However, as beginners, we did find ourselves wishing for a bit more instruction on handling the horses, especially when they picked up speed.

After the ride, we gathered in the cozy farm café for a warm cup of coffee and a chat with the friendly owners. The walls were adorned with photos of famous visitors, adding a touch of history to the charming setting. As a thoughtful gesture, we were each given an old horseshoe as a souvenir, a keepsake that now holds a special place in our home.
