Highlights

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast and a briefing from your guide, leave Moshi at 8 AM, drive for 45 minutes to the Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro, register with the national park, and begin hiking at 10:30 AM. In the rainforest, look for towering Eucalyptus trees, bird life, and Colubus monkeys. At these lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts should be sufficient, but keep your rain gear and warmer clothing handy. Stop halfway for lunch, and reach the Mandara Huts at 2 or 3 PM. Unpack, rest, and have some tea or coffee. A 15 minute side trip to Maundy Crater is a good way to see the surroundings including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Dinner is served during the early evening at 7 PM. Bathrooms with running water are available..

Additional Information

The Rongai route is the sole route to Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan boundary. Despite its increasing appeal to climbers, Rongai experiences limited footfall. This trail is often chosen by those seeking a less crowded alternative to the busy tracks of Marangu & Machame, by those preferring a more secluded hiking experience, as well as by those embarking on their climbing adventure during the rainy spell, due to the north side’s lower rainfall.

Kilimanjaro 5 day Marangu route - Everything was perfect. From the pick up at the airport to the climb to the drop off at the airport post-climb everything was fantastic. First, you are picked up at the airport by the CEO (Elly) and taken to your hotel which is an excellent hotel in Moshi. On day 1 of the climb you are picked up at your hotel by your team and are driven to the gate where the climb begins. Prior to this they do a very thorough gear check at the hotel to make sure you have everything you will need. Anything you need and don't have you can rent on the spot. It's a five day excursion. Day 1, 2, 3, an 5 are easy. Day 4 (summit day) is hard. My team, led by my guide Dulla, was amazing. I observed many of the guides from other companies who were there with other customers and I'm 100% sure Dulla was the best guide. It was not even close. He was on top of every detail throughout the five days. You needed something he had it. There was a problem he fixed it. Couldn't have asked for a better guide than Dulla. Some of the guides with the other companies didn't even make it to the summit on day 4 and had to turn back midway. Throughout the hike the food is good. The accommodation is also good. Once you hike back down to the gate you and your team are picked up and you are taken back to your hotel. Then the CEO (Elly) will come by to the hotel and ask for any feedback - he has a great attitude and work ethic. The next day he picks you up and drives you to the airport. Could not have asked for a better overall experience. The people from Golden Summit Adventures were fantastic.
