This is Africa’s tallest peak, capped with snow and boasting the world’s highest standalone volcanic summits. The mountain is made up of two dormant volcanoes, namely Kibo (5,895m above sea level) and Mawenzi (5,149m above sea level), and one extinct volcano, Shira (3,962m above sea level). While the etymology of its name remains a bit vague, it is presumed to be a combination of the Swahili word ‘Kilima’ denoting ‘Mountain’ and the Kichagga term ‘Njaro,’ loosely meaning ‘Whiteness,’ leading to its epithet of ‘White Mountain.’ Covering an area of 1,712Km2, it was designated a National Park in 1973, opened to tourists in 1977, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and crowned a Natural Wonder of Africa in 2013. An ascent to the top, a soaring climb into the clouds, constitutes a lifelong memory no one ever forgets. Seven official trails are available for climbing up and down Kilimanjaro: Lemosho, Lemosho Western-Breach, Machame, Marangu, Mweka, Rongai, Shira, and Umbwe.
