Conquering Kilimanjaro: A Journey Through Africa’s Diverse Landscapes
Drawn by the allure of Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes, I embarked on a 7-day trek via the Lemosho Route. Join me as I recount the journey to Africa’s peak, guided by the expertise of Gerald and the unforgettable Altezza team.
The Call of Kilimanjaro
As a wildlife photographer and travel writer, my heart has always been drawn to the wild and untamed corners of the world. Africa, with its vast landscapes and rich biodiversity, has been a constant muse. This year, I decided to answer the call of Kilimanjaro, embarking on a 7-day trek via the Lemosho Route. The promise of diverse climatic zones, from lush rainforests to arctic deserts, was too enticing to resist.
Upon arrival in Moshi, I was greeted by the warm hospitality of the Aishi Machame hotel staff. The evening briefing with our guide, Gerald, affectionately known as “The Professor,” set the tone for the adventure ahead. His expertise and passion for the mountain were evident, and I felt reassured knowing we were in capable hands.
The Journey Begins
The trek commenced with a drive to Londorossi Gate, the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. As we ascended through the lush rainforest, the air was filled with the sounds of nature—a symphony of birds and rustling leaves. The first camp, Shira 1, offered breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau, a reminder of the majestic journey that lay ahead.
Each day brought new challenges and rewards. The camaraderie within our group, led by Gerald and his co-guide Thomas, was infectious. Thomas, with his humor and knowledge of local flora and fauna, added a layer of richness to the experience. I found myself captivated by the stories of the land, the Swahili phrases we learned, and the shared laughter that echoed through the camps.
Reaching the Summit
The night of the summit climb was a test of endurance and willpower. As we ascended towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, the air grew thin and the temperature dropped. Yet, the unwavering support of our team, including the guide-in-training Rafael and our camp-master Joseph, kept us moving forward.
Reaching the summit at sunrise was a moment of pure euphoria. The view from the top, with the sun casting a golden hue over the landscape, was a sight I will never forget. It was a reminder of the beauty and resilience of nature, and the importance of preserving these wild places for future generations.
The descent was a celebration of achievement, with our team cheering us on and sharing in the joy of the moment. As we made our way back to Moshi, I reflected on the journey and the incredible people who made it possible. The dedication and professionalism of the Altezza team, from our chef William to our personal attendant Afeman, were unparalleled.
This Kilimanjaro adventure was more than just a trek; it was a journey of self-discovery and a testament to the power of nature to inspire and transform. I left with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the wild places that continue to call to me.
