Start the day with a brief drive up the slopes of Kilimanjaro to reach the village of Materuni, situated approximately 1,800 meters above sea level. This verdant rainforest area is renowned for producing some of the finest coffee in East Africa. It is also the last village before entering Kilimanjaro National Park.

Begin your tour with a delightful 45-minute hike through the scenic hills and valleys leading to the waterfalls. During the journey, your guide will educate you about local plants and their uses in food and traditional medicine, while also providing insights into the local Chagga culture. Expect to see fruit trees such as avocado and banana, among others. The waterfalls are nestled in a pristine valley with cliffs soaring up to 200 feet above. The water cascades straight down in a curtain, landing in a small pool where you can relax and possibly swim in the refreshing mountain waters, weather permitting.

After visiting Materuni Waterfalls, retrace your steps back to a small coffee farm to learn about the local cultivation, harvesting, and processing of coffee. Try your hand at processing, roasting, and preparing a fresh cup of coffee in the traditional Chagga tribe manner. Once finished, savor the coffee at your leisure.

Following the lessons, you will return to your hotel in Arusha by car. This experience promises to be delightful, filled with natural beauty, engaging education, and, of course, delicious coffee.

Materuni Waterfall

At the base of Mount Kilimanjaro lies the village of Materuni, home to the Chagga people. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted with warm smiles and happiness. They wish you a wonderful day, knowing the beauty that awaits you.

From the main road, it’s a 45-minute hike, so we recommend wearing good shoes. Along the way, you’ll walk through a rainforest and fields of banana and coffee plantations, with the fragrant scent of flowers in the air. Your guide will share insights about Chagga culture and show you the flower symbolizing love and forgiveness.

Upon reaching Materuni Waterfall, you can take a swim, but be aware that the water is very cold, as it comes from the glaciers of Kilimanjaro. If you wish to swim under the waterfall, you can try, but the force of the water is strong, so exercise caution. Remember, swimming in Materuni is at your own risk.
