Highlights

From Rongai Gate (1950 m) – 1st Caves Camp (2,600 m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - Your journey on the Kilimanjaro Rongai Route begins at Marangu’s Park Gate, followed by a transfer to the Rongai trailhead (1,950m). The drive to the Rongai gate typically takes about 3 hours. If the weather is favorable, you can enjoy a packed lunch at Nelemoru. This trek will lead you through cypress plantations and mountain forests, where you might spot large monkeys. The trail ends at the first Cave camp (2,600 m), allowing you to gradually take in the surroundings. Porters and cooks move ahead, so when you arrive at camp, they will have already set up your tent and may even have popcorn and a hot drink ready for you. At the camp, you’ll have hot water for washing and can change into warm clothes. Enjoy the camp atmosphere while waiting for dinner. Be prepared for nighttime temperatures that can drop to freezing.

Hike from 1st Caves Camp (2,600 m) to Kikelelwa Cave (3,600 m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - Begin your day at Cave Camp #1 with a light breakfast, then hike through moorland vegetation covered in heather. This trail leads to the second Cave Camp (3450m), where you’ll have lunch. After a rest, continue to the 3rd cave campsite (3,600m), also known as Kikelelwa Cave. The 6-day trek is ideal as it provides ample time for acclimatization. Upon reaching Kikelelwa Cave, the porters will have set up your tent, and you’ll have hot water for washing, along with coffee, tea, and snacks. The camp is nestled in a valley surrounded by small caves, just below the saddle. After dinner, prepare for a very cold night.

Kikelelwa Cave (3,600 m) – Mawenzi Tarn camp (4,330 m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - Start day 3 at Kikelelwa Cave with a light breakfast. The hike begins with a moderate incline, and as the landscape changes, the trail becomes steeper, leading you to Mawenzi Tarn camp at 4,330m. This unique campsite is situated in a depression below Mawenzi’s peak, near a small lake. Upon arrival, you’ll follow the same procedures as previous days, including a hot lunch and some relaxation time. Use the afternoon to rest and explore the area around the campsite. You can take short walks to nearby ridges and towers, offering great views of Kibo. This location is perfect for acclimatization and offers stunning views of Mawenzi. Enjoy a beautiful sunset from your campsite, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.

Climb from Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m) to Kibo Hut (4,700 m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - After a light breakfast, begin your hike up a small ridge, followed by an easy walk on a well-defined trail in the northern part of the saddle. If the weather is clear, the views are spectacular. Today’s hike will take you through an alpine desert with sparse grass and occasional everlasting flowers. At this point, the Rongai Route merges with the Marangu Route at the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The final stretch to Kibo Hut is steeper. Arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700 m) by lunchtime. You’ll have hot water for washing and time to rest and acclimatize, preparing for the final ascent of your 6-day Kilimanjaro Rongai trek.

Summit Attempt (Kibo Hut (4,700 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m))

Mount Kilimanjaro - On summit day, wake-up time is around 11 PM to 11:30 PM. The trek to the summit from Gillman’s Point takes about 1.5 hours. The rest of the hike, usually snow-covered, follows the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. On the way, you’ll pass Stella Point at 5,752m, where other routes converge. The final stretch to the summit is challenging. Congratulations on reaching the highest point in Africa via the 6-day Rongai Route. Spend only a few minutes at Uhuru Peak to take photos before descending. Return to Kibo Hut (4,700 m) for lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m), which takes about 3 hours.

From Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Marangu gate (1,980 m) - Moshi

Mount Kilimanjaro - After a hearty breakfast at Horombo Hut, begin your final day on Kilimanjaro. Descend past Mandara Hut (2,700 m) to Marangu Gate (1,980 m), with a short break for lunch. At Marangu Gate, sign the register and receive your summit certificate: a green certificate for reaching Gillman’s Point and a gold certificate for Uhuru Peak. Celebrations, songs, and farewells with the crew may take place at Horombo Hut in the morning or at Marangu Gate after receiving your certificate. Your driver will be waiting at the gate to take you back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a long, hot shower before dinner and an overnight stay.

Amazing Kili Climb - Reaching the summit. It was hard but worth it. Having a good guide is important. The guide will understand your ability and will aim to help you reach your goal which is the summit. I was a solo hiker that paired up with another solo traveller by the travel company with my consent. Having at least one other climbing with you is good for moral support. The small group was good for me because I could walk at my own pace. It was worth it. I conquered Kilimanjaro.
