Highlights
  • Kilimanjaro National Park - Marangu Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) to Mandara Hut (2,743m/9,000ft) Elevation Gain: 915 meters, 3,000 feet
Leave bustling, colorful Moshi early for the drive to Marangu Gate, the threshold of magnificent Kilimanjaro. It’s just an hour’s drive, but you’ll be captivated by the countryside
  • coffee and banana plantations, through picturesque Marangu village, with Kilimanjaro rising majestically ahead of you.

We’ll register you at the Marangu Gate (because we don’t want to lose you!) and then your adventure will begin. At first, the ridged trail is narrow as you wander through the rainforest. It’s lush and misty, with the trees adorned with moss. The canopy overhead is alive with birdsong and strange rustlings

  • is that a colobus? Mongoose might scuttle ahead of you. You’ll also meet tired hikers descending from the summit. Give them a high five for effort.

The hike to Mandara Hut is around three hours so stop to rest your legs and have a tasty lunch at the Hut and once you’ve replenished yourself, take the short but challenging walk to the Maundi Crater. On a clear day, the views to the east over Taveta and to the northwest to Mawenzi Peak are stunning. Don’t forget your camera! After basking in the beauty of it, you’ll hike back down to the Marangu Gate where our vehicle will be waiting for you to drive you, tired but happy, back to Moshi. Amazing Kilimanjaro adventure - It was an amazing day trip up to the first base camp on Kilimanjaro- Mandara hut and the nearby crater. The nature on the way up was amazing. We saw both species of monkeys of that area - the blue monkey and a beautiful white tail monkey. Special thanks to my guide Dennis, the driver and the manager of the team - Thomas for this unforgettable experience. Asanti sana!

The most amazing rain forest adventure. - We were very pleased with the follow-up and great communication. We were quickly informed of the additional fees for entering the park and adding an, out of area, pick-up. We met our amazing guide Bubush and his budding new guide in training Jackson. And you can forget our driver, who patiently waited for us to finish our hike. They all treated us with great respect. The guides always make sure our needs were met and we stayed safe. We are seniors and it’s a long hike over muddy terrain with a good incline. They reminded us to go slowly and be sure footed. The hike is amazing. Truly the best rainforest I’ve ever seen. We frequently saw monkeys who tried to hide from us in the canopy. We had a really nice, much needed, box lunch at the Mandara Hut. You definitely will feel exhilarated at this half way point. Our guide made sure to assist Babu over the slippery rocks and continue to remind Bebe “poli poli”. They were very complimentary of our accomplishment. We were proud too. Be aware it’s a pretty challenging hike. Carry TP and sanitizer. Drink plenty of water. They were kind enough to help carry some of the heavy bottles. Prepare to get muddy and tired. Carry some tipping money to get your shoes cleaned and to honor these amazing guides. You will love the area and this tour group.

Great time - I booked last minute and they were very accommodating about everything. My guide was great - I was not in great shape and decided not to go all the way to the first check point. He was so enthusiastic about trying to motivate me, really kind and understanding. They packed a really nice lunch. I really enjoyed my time hiking and would do it again (when I’m in better shape!). Highly recommend.

Unforgettable Kilimanjaro Trekking Experience with Kilinge Adventures - Thomas was an exceptional guide on our journey to the Shira summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. His extensive knowledge of the terrain and infectious enthusiasm made the climb an unforgettable experience. Thomas ensured that everyone was comfortable and motivated, sharing fascinating stories about the local flora and fauna that enriched our adventure. At one point, when our group was feeling particularly fatigued, he led us in dancing with the kilimanjaro song that revitalized our spirits and brought us closer together. His expertise and genuine care for each climber’s well-being made all the difference, and I couldn't imagine a better guide for this challenging yet rewarding trek.

Magnificent Shira Plateau Day Hike - We (couple) did the Shira Plateau Day Hike on 22nd of May 2024. Thomas our guide took us up the mountain with a jeep. He picked is up from Moshi. The way up with the jeep alone is Breathtaking, the changes of scenery… At 3600 meters our walk started with AMAZING views through an unique ‘mostly’ flat landscape. We walked for 6 hours and headed back down afterwards with the jeep. Crazy time on Kilimanjaro. Had lunch at beautiful spot, Memories for life. (We didn’t spot Kibo Peak through the cloud cover).

A Great Hike on Kilimajaro - The day trip to the Shira Plateau was well organized and gave us an excellent experience of the lower parts of the mountain. We were lucky that the weather was excellent, and we were able to see the summit very clearly. The communication was very good, and the transport arrangements were stuck to throughout. Our guide was able to answer many of our questions and pointed out many things during our hours on the mountain. The guide also helped us a little in town following our time on the mountain to pick up some items from a tourist shop. The tourist shop wasn't pushy at all which is very unusual. He also helped us pick up a sim card for the rest of our trip ensuring we had wifi to use. The only downside was that the option extra hike to Cathedral point should have been discussed prior to going. We were up for it but time did not allow, which was a bit of a shame as we finished the hike quite quickly. All said I would definitely use them again for this kind of trip, and would recommend them to others to use.

Good value option for Kili day hike - Enjoyed a day hike from Moshi to Kilimanjaro Natl Park with Kilinge while visiting East Africa from the USA. The driver Hans and guide Tyson picked me up on time, were friendly, and spoke English well. I am learning some Swahili, and they helped me with words and phrases. They were on time. Once we got to Kili Natl Park, it was an easy registration, then the hike began. We took the Maringu route to Mandara hut, which took me about 3.5 hrs. The altitude change was a little tough for me with the uphill hike, but Tyson was very encouraging. He carried a box lunch for me, which was tasty and more than I could eat. We continued on to Maundi crater, then turned around and made our way back down, which was another 2.5-3hrs. I saw beautiful monkeys and hyrax along the way. Overall was about 8 hrs with the driving. The price Kilinge charges is competitive and the value was good. I'd just suggest double checking all of the costs up front. In addition to the Viator booking price, the listing mentioned the national park fee, but not how much it was (Kili park website said 70$USD, plus tax, so that is what I planned for), nor a fee for the guide's entry, or another fee for being a solo hiker (which I was able to negotiate out of, but felt very guilty about) that the owner mentioned later when I contacted them the day before the tour asking to verify the park fee cost. They should mention all the costs upfront. Park fee can only be paid by card, also, which would be good to mention. So, just be sure to get clear info on the fees ahead of time. The only other issue was that the driver pulled over on the way back from Kili on a random street corner and fully rolled down my window while talking on the phone, with no explanation for the reason for doing this. I felt a bit unsafe, as I didn't understand what was happening, especially as women stuck their hands in the car at me with goods they were trying to sell --they were also clearly confused by what he was doing. Travel warnings for Moshi area often mention bag and phone snatchings from open windows, so this is not something I would have done if I'd had control of the situation. It felt a bit unprofessional at best. But overall, it was a good experience and I would recommend Kilinge.
