Highlights
  • Materuni Waterfalls - #Materuni Village

Here you can really get to grips with the life of the local #Chagga people- wandering through the village and passing their homesteads. Located in the picturesque #foothills of #Kilimanjaro. Once you reach the village you will start your #coffee tour at a traditional Chagga ‘shamba’ (farm). Here your guide will explain all aspects of the Chagga homestead including the other crops that they grow aside from coffee. You will get to see how the coffee is produced- from picking the bean to roasting and then drinking a delicious cup yourself. Following your coffee tour, you will then take a short hike (make sure to wear some good shoes as it can be muddy up there), passing through local villages to reach the #waterfalls. Here you will either have a picnic lunch box. Following lunch, you will have the opportunity to take a dip in the refreshing (quite cold!) #pools beneath the waterfalls. After that, you will walk back to the car back to #Moshi

Additional Information

Materuni village, majestically perched on the fringes of Moshi, offers a visually stunning escape into lush surroundings. It offers a deep dive into the lifestyle of the indigenous Chagga tribe as you explore the village and its dwellings. Nestled in the scenic lower terrains of Kilimanjaro, Materuni maintains its genuine appeal distinct from other tourist spots, primarily because it’s not a trailhead for Kilimanjaro ascents.

Materuni safari - Our guide Kaleby picked us up from the hotel in Arusha and we went to the beautiful park Tarangire. We saw many animals and the views were amazing. Kaleby had a answer to every question we had. We saw a leopard! We spent the night in Haven Nature Lodge. Great place, good food, great staff! Early in the morning we drove to Ngorogoro Crater. Undescribable place, we came close to lions with 4 cubs playing. Elephants, hyenas, sebras, wildbeasts, birds. Materuni tours did all they promised. Great guide, good car and good food.

Living a day as a local! - This tour will give you a really good perspective how the daily life of a real person in a Tanzanian village looks like. They will bring you the beautiful waterfall and after have a coffee workshop. Extra special was the personal touch of the guide who lived his whole childhood in Materuni village. He showed his house where he grew up and we visited the school where he went as a child.

Perfect local guided half day trip - Very late evening I decided to go on a halfday trip the next morning to Materuni waterfalls including a ‚coffee ceremony‘. So I texted Ambrose, owner of the Materuni Tours company (you find the whatsapp number on their website), he replied within 10 min, we arranged the trip and I got picked up by him the next morning at my ‘hotel’. The perfect service continued, including picking up my lunch box. On the way to the waterfalls we were able to see Kili and even Mt Meru, Ambrose explained me a lot about the flora and fauna, the local Chagga people (he’s one of them :)), Tanzanian schools etc. It was a perfect tour with a real local since he was born in a village very close to the waterfalls. So he could even show me the school he went to and: the social projects he’s organizing and supporting at schools like building a kitchen or a playground! After having some local coffee (self grained and roasted!) he dropped me off at my hotel again (after a stop at ATM & supermarket). I truly can recommend him/Materuni Tours. Asante for the nice day, Ambrose and please stick to your social heart for the local kids!
