Mandara Huts - A trek of approximately 12 km over 5 hours through the montane forest and low alpine zone (moorland).
The 5-day Mt Kilimanjaro Climbing Marangu route begins today with a hike to Mandara Hut at 2,700 m. The journey takes you through the stunning mountain forest landscape, featuring small streams and waterfalls. The Kisamboni picnic area, a perfect spot for lunch, is reached after about 1.5 hours of walking from the park gate.
The water in this area is spring-fed and suitable for drinking, cooking, and flushing toilets.
A short walk to the Maundi Crater offers the chance to enjoy pleasant weather and possibly view Mawenzi Peak. Blue monkeys and black and white colobus monkeys are often seen here.
Upon arrival at the huts each day, tea/coffee and snacks are provided, followed by hot water for washing before changing out of hiking clothes. Staying warm is essential on the mountain. Dinner is served before bedtime.
Mandara Hut (2,700 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Kibo Hut (4,700 m)
Summit Attempt: Kibo Hut (4,700 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) & Back to Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Uhuru Peak - A trek of approximately 6 km ascent and 21 km descent over 8 hours on the rocky, ice-capped summit.
Depending on your pace, you may wake up at 23:00 or 23:30 for tea and biscuits before starting. The initial part of the climb is challenging, with a rough and rocky path.
Along the way, you will pass Williams Point at 5,000 m, Hans Meyer Cave at 5,150 m, and Gillman’s Point at 5,681 m on the crater rim. Reaching Hans Meyer Cave from Kibo Hut takes about two and a half hours. Gillman’s Point is a short distance from Hans Meyer Cave, taking about an hour to reach. From Gillman’s Point, it takes at least 1.5 hours to reach the summit. Spend a few minutes at the summit for photos, but not too long at this altitude, before descending back to Kibo Hut at 4,700 m for lunch, then continue down to Horombo.
Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Marangu Gate (1,980 m) – Then Drive to Moshi
Marangu - A trek of approximately 27 km over 6 hours through the low alpine zone, moorland, and montane forest.
Enjoy breakfast at Horombo Hut before starting the final descent from Kilimanjaro.
Lunch and a rest at Mandara Hut (2,700 m) are part of the journey down, with the path being familiar from the first day.
Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you will register your details and receive a summit certificate. A green certificate is awarded for reaching Gilman’s Point, and a gold certificate for Uhuru Peak, the actual summit. Tips for porters and guides are appreciated and can be given at Horombo Gate in the morning during celebrations before descending to Marangu Hut.
Meet your driver at the gate for the transfer back to Moshi.

The Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary via the Marangu route spans 5 days and is considered relatively easy, although the final ascent to the summit presents challenges. Despite being labeled as an easier path, it has the highest failure rate due to inadequate preparation and poorly timed attempts. These issues have prompted KINAPA officials to implement stricter guidelines for climbers on the Marangu route. All camps along this path are equipped with reliable radio communication to the park office. Additionally, items such as mineral water, soft drinks, beer, and chocolates are available at these camps.
While the Marangu route can be completed in 5 days, it is recommended to add an extra day for acclimatization at Horombo camp. This is the only route on the mountain that provides hut accommodations with beds and mattresses.
