On the 9th of November 1993, the Old Bridge of Mostar, a notable historical site, was reduced to ruins during a war. Constructed in 1566 during the reign of the Ottoman Empire, this architectural marvel was ravaged by Croatian artillery during a savage battle with Bosnian Muslims.
Post-war, the bridge was restored using many of the original limestone blocks that were recovered from the river. Prince Charles inaugurated the newly built bridge in 2004, a symbolic act that signified the gradual return of normalcy, demonstrating the bravery and resilience of the city’s residents. In 2005, UNESCO honored the bridge by including it in their World Heritage list.
Bulevar Street, a prominent roadway, extends from the north to the south end of the city. It had once been the dividing line between Bosnians and Croats when warfare raged. Presently, it stands as the city’s core and accommodates the splendid Mostar City Hall.
