Mostar Old Bridge - When the Turks invaded Mostar, a wooden bridge existed where the Old Bridge stands today. It was suspended on chains, requiring careful crossing. By the mid-16th century, the bridge had deteriorated, prompting the people of Mostar to request a new, durable bridge from the authorities in Istanbul. Designed by Hajrudin, a student of the renowned 16th-century Turkish architect Sinan, the Old Bridge was completed and opened in July or August 1566.
Its span measures 28.70 meters, featuring a single large stone arch. The bridge is 4.49 meters wide, with a height of 21 meters from the summer water level. Constructed from square stones linked with iron hooks and cast in lead, it is a marvel to behold. Visitors often pause to admire this masterpiece. Mostar is renowned for its bridge throughout Europe and the world. The old town’s central area, with its forts, towers, and gates, developed around this magnificent monument, creating a unique architectural ensemble. - Mezarje/Groblje Liska Park - This historic green space in Mostar was originally established in 1954. During the 1992–1995 war, it became a burial site for civilians and soldiers of various nationalities due to the scarcity of available cemeteries. The park remains a significant and sensitive location in Mostar, reflecting the city’s complex history.
- Spanish Square - A prominent location in the city, named in 1995 to honor 21 Spanish troops who lost their lives at UNPROFOR during the last war. The main building dominating Spanish Square is Stara Gimnazija (Old Gymnasium). Completed in 1902, it was one of the oldest schools in former Yugoslavia and was named after the famous poet Aleksa Šantić for a long time. Built in the Moorish Revival architectural style, also known as Neo-Moorish style, it is now listed as a national monument.
- Old Bazar Kujundziluk - The old part of town on the left bank of the Neretva is known as Kujundžiluk, named after the many coppersmiths “Kujundžije.” While there were numerous tailors, the most prevalent artisans were tanners, skilled in leather processing. Today, Kujundziluk is an area filled with small artisan workshops and captivating handicrafts.
- Carinski (Emperor’s) Bridge - The Carinski Bridge (Customs Bridge) is a lesser-known yet historically significant bridge in Mostar, spanning the Neretva River just north of the famous Old Bridge. Originally constructed during the Austro-Hungarian period, it has served as a crucial crossing point connecting different parts of the city.
- Crooked Bridge (Kriva Cuprija) - Nestled in the charming old quarter of Mostar, the Crooked Bridge (Kriva Ćuprija) is a hidden gem with timeless beauty. Believed to be a miniature prototype of the famous Old Bridge (Stari Most), it dates back to the 16th century and arches gracefully over the Radobolja River.
