- Giant Pohutukawa Tree - This ancient tree, estimated to be around 600 years old, is the last remaining pre-European Pōhutukawa on the Mt Maunganui ‘sand bar’ and holds significance for the local Ngäi Te Rangi Iwi. Early settlers reportedly found several pre-European skeletons in a kneeling ceremonial position at the tree’s base. Māori leader Kihi Ngatai (Ngai Te Rangi) noted that during Cyclone Bola, several branches broke off, but local Māori would not allow the council to cut the tree, as the deceased were once hung from its branches until they decomposed, with their bones then buried underneath.
