- Coastal Expeditions on Shem Creek - Once you check in at Coastal Expeditions, your guides will prepare your group for the adventure by fitting your gear and offering a brief safety and instruction on how to sea kayak. Once we’re on the water, we’ll take a minute to get our “sea legs” before we paddle down towards the historic portion of Shem Creek and Charleston Harbor. We will return to this point at the end of the tour.

During the summer, manatees and sea turtles also inhabit this creek. The experienced guides from Coastal Expeditions spearhead this voyage, ensuring a secure and enjoyable adventure for participants of every age.

Coastal Expeditions is located at the end of Mill Street on the left. Parking is available in the private lot. If the lot is full, public parking is available on Mill or Scott Streets. Check in upstairs in the Coastal Expeditions office.

Fantastic Experience! - My Fiancé and I had a wonderful time kayaking around Shems Creek! Chance was a fantastic guide with an abundance of knowledge! We were lucky enough to see a dolphin fishing. We highly recommend taking a tour when in the area!

Best birthday present!! - The best birthday gift I could have asked for!! The water and tour were wonderful and a dolphin almost jumped in my husbands boat! :) The best part was our tour guide! Jackie was knowledgeable, friendly, and it was evident she was passionate about her job and the ecosystem. Would highly recommend this tour!

As a local, Coastal Ex is the only one I use - What a gorgeous day on Shem Creek and CHS harbor. Coastal Ex makes it so easy to enjoy being on the water! Thank you to their terrific staff.

Loved it more than Lilli loves moss - Our tour guide Lilli was incredibly knowledgeable about the wildlife and plant life on the tour, but the best part was her genuine joy and excitement to share it with us! This was the highlight of our trip to Charleston and we will recommend it to everyone. Must do & book with Lilli!!!!!!

Beautiful kayak trip with a knowledgeable guide - My husband and I booked the 3-hour Shem Creek kayak tour. Jackie was a wonderful guide—very personable and knowledgeable. I think she knew every bird not only by sight, but also by call. There wasn’t a question she didn’t have the answer to. It was chillier when we started out, so lucky for us we got a private tour!

Great kayaking experience - Nate, the wildlife, and the dolphins made it worthwhile - This was my best kayaking experience during my 2 week vacation in the Carolinas and Georgia. Nate my guide was great and was passionate about the wildlife in the area. He was a lot of fun to chat with on the water and made the kayaking very enjoyable. I also saw two dolphins swim parallel right next to my kayak in the opposite direction, at point blank range! It's a pity I didn't take out my camera in time!
I look forward to kayaking with Coastal Expeditions again the next time I visit Charleston. A big thanks to Nate.

Always a great experience!!!!! - Have done this trip 10 times now. Always a great experience. Staff at headquarters is always professional and friendly. Jackie was our naturalist on board, fantastic. Capt Dolphins great. Never had any issues. Great finds on island. Will go back again.

Shem Creek at its finest! - The Shem Creek Kayak Tour was great! Our guide was so knowledgeable (it was her first time doing the tour solo and she did fantastic!!). The pace was just right and the amount of time perfect, too. We got to see part of the creek and then went out toward the harbor to see the fishing village. This is a fantastic and FUN tour!!

Shem Creek Kayak Tour - My adult daughter and I went on the Shem Creek kayaking tour, led by Morgan, last weekend. Overall we had an enjoyable time, though once we got out into the wider mouth of the waters (past the piers), all we really did was sit and chat. Morgan was delightful: Energetic, knowledgeable and friendly, so this isn't really a criticism of her, though we would have liked to see more of the marsh and paddled more than we did. I do recognize that she could only do what the group was capable of, so that might have limited us a bit, but still, I believe that there was room for us to do a bit more.
