Additional Information

This is a walking tour with a difference, guided by Captain Bryan. It’s not the typical ‘sit and listen’ type of tour, where the guide doesn’t bother to know your name. Instead, after a quick introduction, Captain Bryan will guide you through the historical rise of Shem Creek and its renowned shrimping fleet, amongst other things. This tour provides a unique opportunity to witness the industry in action. If luck strikes, you might even meet Mr. Rector at Geechie Seafood, surrounded by his numerous shrimp boats, a glorious symbol of the abundant catch waiting out in the ocean. This isn’t just a tour; it is an opportunity to truly engage with the culture of Shem Creek. Guests go home with a slice of history, cultural insights, local lingo, delicious snacks, and above all, a newfound respect for our local shrimp harvesters and the historical significance of their ceaseless efforts.

  • Walking distance is around 1.5 miles. Please note especially with summer heat that guests should be able to walk this distance.

Shem Creek history and shrimping - We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Captain Bryan. He shared so much history with us, tales about people from 400 years ago, and over the centuries since. He made it possible for us to picture so much. We especially enjoyed the visits to the shrimp businesses, experiencing many aspects of this current industry in this setting. The grand finale was when we (he) caught a puffer fish. How cool!

The history that he shared was valuable to understanding the Shrimp industry, hence the name of his tour: Shem Creek Shrimp Historic Walking Tour. We highly recommend Captain Bryan's tour!

Better than the History Channel! - The BEST tour ever! Captain Bryan could be a National Geographic Historian! 10/10 knows his US and World History! Excellent for children and adults! We started homeschool this summer and our two boys learned more from him, than any printed curriculum, amazing! Bring water, sunscreen and WALKING shoes. The only thing that would have been better was if we could take Captain Bryan to ALL the sites in Charleston 🙌 highly recommended!
