Coming from the north, in proximity to the Kenyan borderline, the Rongai route is the sole conduit to Kilimanjaro. It’s gradually building popularity among mountaineers, yet it still experiences light traffic. It serves as an excellent alternative to the overly populated Marangu route for those favoring a secluded trek, or for climbers navigating the rainy season as the northern side records lesser rainfall.
The quickest completion time for this path is six days, though taking seven is often suggested. Despite the lack of diverse landscape compared to the westward routes, Rongai compensates this with its passage through untouched wilderness for days before merging with the Marangu route at the Kibo camp. The descent is through the Marangu route. Rongai poses moderate difficulty and is highly endorsed, especially for those new to backpacking.
