Nalemoru Gate To Simba Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - This morning, the journey begins with a drive to the village of NaleMuru, marking the start of the Rongai route. The initial trek takes you through farmland and pine forests.
There is an opportunity to spot the stunning Colobus monkeys, and with some luck, elephants or buffalos along the way. The first camp, Simba Camp, is situated at the edge of the moorland zone at 2625m, offering expansive views over the Kenyan plains.
Simba Camp To Rongai 2nd Cave Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - The morning trek involves a steady climb to the Second Cave (3,450m), providing magnificent views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After a hot lunch, there is free time to relax at the camp or explore the surrounding area with an acclimatization walk to Third Cave.
Rongai 2nd Cave Camp To Kikelewe Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Exiting the pine forest, the trek continues with a steady ascent through moorland. The views of the Eastern ice fields on Kibo’s crater rim, the tallest of the three volcanoes forming the mountain, are breathtaking.
The path diverges from the main trail, crossing moorland towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s second volcano. Today’s camp is set in the sheltered valley near Kikelewa caves at 3630m.
Kikelewe Camp To Mawenzi Tarn Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - The morning involves a short but steep climb up grassy slopes, rewarded by stunning views of the Kenyan plains to the north.
Vegetation is left behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn Hut, directly beneath the towering cliffs of Mawenzi. The afternoon offers a chance to rest or explore the area to aid acclimatization.
Mawenzi Tarn Hut To Kibo Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - Departing the campsite, the trek crosses the lunar desert of the ‘saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo. After a few hours of trekking, this spectacular location is reached, with Kilimanjaro’s summit in the background and the trail to the high camp ahead.
Upon arrival at the camp, the rest of the day is dedicated to resting in preparation for the final ascent after an early night.
Kibo Hut To Uhuru Peak & Down To Horombo Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - The final ascent begins around midnight, a long and challenging climb. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb steadily progresses upwards. At sunrise, Gillman’s Point (5681m) is reached – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun begins to warm the land.
The cold of the night is soon forgotten, and after an additional 1 - 2 hours of hiking, Uhuru Peak at 5895m is reached. Upon returning to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits, followed by a 1 - 2 hour rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.
Horombo Hut To Marangu Gate
Mount Kilimanjaro - The final stage traverses the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m), where a warm lunch is ready. Soon, the tropical rainforest is passed again, and after 6 hours of trekking, the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m) is reached. After bidding farewell to the mountain guides, a short transfer returns you to your hotel in Moshi. There, a warm and relaxing shower awaits, along with the celebration of reaching Kilimanjaro’s summit.
Remember to tip the guides, cooks, and porters, as they will be left here. A vehicle will transport you back to your hotel in Moshi, where it’s time to celebrate!

Rongai Route:
The Rongai route is unique as it is the only path that ascends Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. While it is becoming more popular among climbers, it still experiences low traffic.
This route is ideal for those seeking an alternative to the busy Marangu route, desiring a more secluded hike, or climbing during the rainy season (as the northern side receives less rainfall).
The route requires a minimum of six days, with seven days being the recommended duration. Although the scenery is less diverse compared to the western routes, Rongai compensates by traversing genuine wilderness areas for several days before merging with the Marangu route at Kibo camp.
The descent follows the Marangu route. Rongai is considered moderately challenging and is highly recommended, particularly for those with limited backpacking experience.
