The drive from Moshi to the trailhead takes about 3 hours. We hike through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery. This route shares a lot in common with the Lemosho route, but it starts at 3,600 meters, making it less suitable for those without much experience in high altitude trekking. Your journey will commences at Shira Gate leading up to Simba Camp, before linking up with the Lemosho Route on the second day at Shira Camp 2. Unfortunately, this high starting point is often a drawback for this route as altitude sickness frequently strikes from the start due to limited acclimatization time.
There are numerous route diversions across the Shira Plateau. Beyond Shira Camp 2, the route intersects with the Machame Route by way of Lava Tower, then descends to Barranco Camp via the Southern Circuit. The climb to Uhuru Peak is executed via Barafu Camp and through the southern slopes of Kibo.
This trail is typically less frequented by other hikers, hence, your initial two days on the mountain will likely be far less crowded compared to most alternative routes.
