Highlights

Chiang Mai to Chiang Kong - Huay Xay, Lao

Wat Rong Khun - Wat Rong Khun is a distinctive temple known for its white color and the incorporation of glass pieces in the plaster, which glisten in the sunlight. The white color represents the Buddha’s purity, while the glass signifies the Buddha’s wisdom and the Dhamma, the Buddhist teachings. Designed by renowned Thai visual artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, the temple is still under construction. Eventually, it will feature nine buildings, including an ubosot, a hall for enshrining Buddhist relics, a meditation hall, monks’ living quarters, and an art gallery.

On May 5th, 2014, a strong earthquake struck Chiang Rai, causing significant damage to the white temple. Chalermchai Kositpipat decided to restore and further expand Wat Rong Khun.

Chiang Khong - Chiang Khong (เชียงของ) is a small town in Chiang Rai Province, Northern Thailand. It is primarily visited as a stopover en route to Laos and serves as the Thai counterpart to the Lao border town of Huay Xai, just across the Mekong River.

Huay Xai - Houayxay (Huay Xai) is the capital of Bokeo province in Laos. While most travelers use Huay Xai as a stopover to other destinations, the town offers a beautiful landscape for outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and biking. Its relaxed atmosphere is perfect for those looking to enjoy local beer, relax by the Mekong River, and savor authentic Laotian cuisine.

Huay Xai to PakBeng, Lao

Pak Beng - The van will pick you up around 9:15 AM at Hauy Xai Hotel to take you to the luxury boat to Pak Beng. You will embark on one of our luxury boats for a downstream cruise on the Mekong River. The boat will make its first stop in Pak Tha to have necessary boat documents signed. The second stop will be at a KHMU Hilltribe village along the Mekong River, where our guide will explain the lifestyle and origins of these rural communities. Lunch is served on board, and in the afternoon, you can relax and enjoy local flavors with seasonal snacks and drinks. The boat will arrive in Pakbeng before sunset, where you will stay overnight. Pakbeng is a small village in Laos, located on the Mekong River, about halfway between the Thai border at Huay Xai and Luang Prabang, Laos. Pakbeng is connected by a sealed road with Oudomxay province along the Nam Beng River. You will need to book your hotel in Pak Beng independently.

Pakbeng to Luang Prabang, Lao

Pak Ou Caves - At 8:00 AM, the boat departs from Pakbeng. Use your free time in the morning to ask our guide any questions about Luang Prabang and Laos. Lunch is served on board. In the afternoon, we will make two stops. First, we will visit the famous Pak Ou Caves (Tham Ting) with its thousands of Buddha images. The second stop will be at a Lao village, commonly known as the Whisky Village. Here, the guide will provide information about the locally made rice whisky, and you will have the opportunity to taste it if you wish. You will also have time to explore the charm of this small, authentic village, its temple, and local artisans.

Luang Prabang - The boat is expected to dock in Luang Prabang around 5:00 PM, and we will transfer you to your hotel. Luang Prabang boasts both natural and historical sites. Phou Si, located in the center of town, offers expansive views of the town and river system and is a popular spot to watch the sunset over the Mekong River. At the end of the main street in Luang Prabang, a night market features stalls selling shirts, bracelets, and other souvenirs. The Haw Kham Royal Palace Museum and the Wat Xieng Thong temple are among the most well-known historical sites. The town, especially the main street, is dotted with many smaller wats. Every morning at sunrise, monks walk in a procession through the streets to accept alms from local residents, an event that is popular with tourists. Luang Prabang was awarded ‘Best City’ in the Wanderlust Travel Awards 2015.
