Situated adjacent to the former Mumbai Heptanesia, Bandra, or as the Portuguese referred to it, Bandor, initially consisted of 24 separate villages primarily occupied by the Kolis, a fishing community. During the 16th and 17th centuries, a substantial number of these villages adopted Catholicism due to the influence of Portuguese rule. The British later labelled these converts as East Indians, who currently constitute Bandra’s cultural foundation.
After gaining independence, the rice paddies and crops were steadily replaced by the opulent residences of celebrities, solidifying Bandra as Mumbai’s Beverly Hills. Despite this influx of urban development, pockets of Bandra still retain vestiges of village life, echoing the old Bandor.
This tour offers tribute to the East Indian community, celebrating their unique lifestyle, historical journey, and rich cultural heritage.
