  • Elephanta Caves - the famed caves of Elephanta, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 to preserve the artwork. Elephanta Island is located 10 km away from the Gateway of India at Mumbai. The island is about an hour away by boat ride from Gateway of India. Elephanta Island houses caves known as Elephanta Caves in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai, India. These caves are rock cut temple/statues of Lord Shiva, Ganesha, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh dating back to the 5th century. Elephanta Island was named by the Portuguese, after the statue of an Elephant was seen near the landing area of the island.Elephanta showcases legends of Lord Shiva carved in rock cave temples. The cave complex is a collection of shrines, courtyards, innercells, grand halls and porticos arranged in the splendid symmetry of Indian rock-cut architecture, and filled with exquisite stone sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The temple complex is also said to be the abode of Lord Shiva.

  • Kanheri Caves - Kanheri is over 2000 years old, and provides a rare opportunity to understand monastic life in ancient India. Located on a prosperous trade route, Kanheri saw continuous occupation from the 1st century BC, until the decline of Buddhism in India in the 9th century AD. Fantastic Sites - After the initial coordination snags were sorted, I had a very positive experience. My guide and driver were able to give me a comprehensive tour despite time constraints (I had a flight to catch). The sites are interesting and beautiful - definitely worth the visit.

Great guide! - The weather on our day made getting back and forth from Elephant Caves a much longer trip than usual. They were great to see and our guide was excellent! Unfortunately we missed the Kanheri caves and market, but did enjoy seeing the park by Kanheri caves and hearing about the city and the people from our guide.

Fake tour. Don't buy!. - We paid over 170$ for 4 ppl. The price did not cover our hotel pickup even though we stayed in Hilton Mumbai International airport hotel. They charged us 1000Rs for pickup and dropoff from hotel to Gateway. The price did not cover the cost of the boat ride nor the elephant caves entrance fees nor did it cover the guide at the caves. We did not the snacks nor were received by a agent. Our driver for the hotel pickup did not speak English. Not sure where our 170$ went.
