The outer caves were used as a place of Hindu worship until Portuguese rule was established. The caves further in are smaller and are Buddhist caves.
The main cave, otherwise known as the Shiva Cave, contains numerous carvings throughout depicting various aspects of Lord Shiva including his wedding, his slaying of Andhaka and more. There will also be a sculpture of the Trimurti in the main cave that is approximately 20 feet tall.
Other wings of the caves have shrines dedicated to Shiva’s sons, Kartikeya and Ganesh. Book and explore this UNESCO World Heritage site with a guide from Gharapuri, which is a small village on the south side of the island.
- Gateway Of India Mumbai - The Gateway of India is an arch monument built during the 20th century in Mumbai. The monument was erected to commemorate the landing of King-Emperor George V and Queen-Empress Mary at Apollo Bunder on their visit to India in 1911.

Enjoyable and informative - An excellent, informative tour of a world heritage site from Chetan, who it also turns out is a very good photographer. All the transport tickets etc are handled too. Highly recommend.

Accessible trip to Elephanta - We had a tour to Elephanta caves arranged for our little girl that is disabled by Mystical Mumbai. Everyone was really helpful and she was carried along with her chair to the top of the caves making the experience accessible for her. In particular our guide Raj was phenomenal in supporting us and being patient allowing our whole group to have a chance to enjoy the trip, I would definitely use them again!

Carefree, Edicational Tour of Elephanta island - The Caves on Elephanta Island are amazing! Unbelievable detail and history behind their construction and then destruction by them by the Portuguese. Aarti took wonderful care getting of getting us making sure our every need was met and providing us with historical, cultural, and city information. She was easy to be around and made us ever so comfortable. Our local guide shared so much about the Caves and their significance. Plus, he was a great photographer!! Thanks to Aarti for making it all happens and allowing us to thoroughly enjoy the significant Caves of Elephanta Island!!

Elephanta Caves - great guides! - Great Tour. Raj was a great guide for our way to the island. On the island Chetan was a great photographer and explained us every thing we needed to know about the caves!

AMAZING GUIDES AND EXPERIENCE - Very good experience, the driver (Mukesh) incredibly friendly and explanatory, being a very good guide during the route to the meeting point and back. Intermediate guide Rash also very friendly and funny. And our super friendly and clear cave guide with explanations. I would repeat the experience with each of them.

Excellent from all points of view - Great service. The driver with a guide picked us up at the hotel in Mumbai and accompanied us to the pier for Elephanta. There we met the guide to the caves

Wonderful experience in Elephanta - The excursion was fantastic! The guides - Anthony and Sameer - amazing. I had so much interesting information about the caves! more than I could wish.
