• Pinakothek Museums: The powerful Wittelsbach family, who ruled Bavaria for over 750 years, including as Holy Roman Emperors, amassed a wealth of art. In the early 1800s, King Ludwig I commissioned a vast art complex to house the Royal family’s extensive painting collection. When the Pinakothek building opened in 1836, it became the largest museum in the world. One of the expansive galleries was specifically built to display Rubens’s “Last Judgment” from 1617, one of the largest canvases ever painted.
• The English Garden: One of the finest urban parks in the world. Munich’s expansive green space is not only one of the largest in Europe, but it is more than twice the size of both New York City’s Central Park and London’s Hyde Park.
• Munich Residenz: Originally a small defensive castle for the royal family in 1385 called Neuveste, it expanded over the centuries into the vast palace seen today. While there is much to explore in the palace, our favorite room to visit is the Antiquarium Hall. The Hall was constructed to house the Wittelsbach family’s extensive collection of antiques, books, and classic sculptures.
• Attend Oktoberfest: Featuring 14 major tents, each capable of accommodating 5,000 to 10,000 party-goers. Oompah music fills every corner of the Oktoberfest grounds while traditionally dressed guests hold liter beer mugs and enjoy authentic German cuisine. Oktoberfest is a family-friendly event offering much more than just the large beer tents. Smaller tents, along with a variety of state fair games, carnival rides, and even a roller coaster, will keep you entertained for days.
• Saint Peter’s Church: The oldest parish in town, predating the city of Munich itself. In the 800s, a group of monks were the first to settle here, building a modest monastery and chapel on what they called Saint Peter’s Hill. This not only defined Munich’s location, but the name München is literally derived from Mönch, the German word for monk.
