Highlights
  • Kichijoji - Our food tour of Tokyo \- the world’s largest metropolis, and arguably its most flavorful \- delves into the rich culinary traditions of a distinct district, Kichijoji, tasting our way through classic yakitori spots, shiny department stores, cutting-edge pubs, vibrant street food stalls, and beyond.

  • Inokashira Onshi Park - Our gastronomic journey in a Tokyo neighborhood kicks off at a depachika to immerse ourselves in one of Tokyo’s magnificent department store food emporiums, where culinary offerings honor both age-old customs and the latest fads. Navigating through coveted pickled delicacies, regal-quality fruits, and the corridor of Japanese snack foods, we make our way to the sushi bar favored by the residents.

Strolling down Kichijoji’s lively shotengai shopping avenue, we’ll mingle with the residents as they carry out their everyday shopping, gaining insight into the fundamentals of Japanese cookery and sampling some of its staples, like yakitori skewers and street-side served octopus dumplings. We’ll encounter a family of three generations of senbei craftsmen working together in their compact store and workshop, and further along, we’ll explore an eatery that specializes in miso. We’ll try exotic dishes seldom found outside of Japan, such as sake flavored with fugu fin, the notorious blowfish, as well as impeccably made classics like tea and confections.

Fantastic tour for those interested in the intersection between food and culture. - Fantastic tour. Our guide Dennis was very knowledgeable, and willing to share his experiences as a longtime resident of Japan. We learned so much about Japanese culture through the discussion of food and its history. We visited several local businesses, and had the opportunity to try things we would never have found on our own. This is an especially good tour for those who are interested in how food is related to culture and vice versa.

Unforgettable Experience - Our family of six embarked on this tour during our first full day in Japan, and it was the best start to the trip we could have imagined. Our guide, Elly, was as kind and funny as she was knowledgeable, and had a close connection with the neighborhood we toured throughout the day, Kichijoji. We learned and tasted things we never would have without Elly and the tour, and got to meet some absolutely amazing local people along the way. Thank you and bravo!

Get your culinary bearings in Tokyo. - This tour plunges you directly into the heart of a confusing and sometimes difficult to access city. We went on day 2 of our stay in Tokyo and it was a perfect, mindful and authentic experience. Our guide (Ken) had a genuine connection to the places we visited and a deep knowledge and love for the foods of Tokyo. This is a great way for a foreigner to start their trip and it got my kids (12 and 15) talking about and trying things like miso and pickle (and of course waygu, sushi, and tempura) the rest of the trip. Our tour included a magnificent trip to 7-11 where we picked out stuff with our guide for a picnic in the park. It was just the right amount of adventure and I would highly, highly recommend.

Great food tour in Kichijoji - My husband and I had a wonderful food tour of the Kichijoji area of Tokyo with Phoebe. We chose this tour because it was in an area that we would not normally visit. and it was a pleasure to walk around the quiet and quaint narrow streets and alleys - a surprise in this huge and bustling city. Phoebe was wonderful: We had trouble finding the meeting point once arriving at the Kichijoji station and I called her and she explained exactly how to find it, and even suggested taking a picture of where we were so that she could come and find us! Phoebe introduced us to many types of Japanese food and we started the day with excellent sushi and the delicious food and drink continued from there. We had a tasting of 9 different types of miso and learned a lot about the various types and flavours, where they came from and their uses - certainly an interesting experience. The day ended in an interesting sake bar in a really tiny alley. We definitely did not need dinner after the tour! Phoebe seemed to have an excellent rapport with all the owners of the food and drink stalls and offered us many extras, such as excellent coffee and delicious strawberries from the market. She was fun and interesting and she took care to make sure that the pace suited us and that we had water and bathroom breaks. We enjoyed speaking to her about life in Japan and she was very forthcoming with information and was happy to answer all our questions. Phoebe was also happy to give us restaurant recommendations in other Japanese cities. Phoebe is a fabulous guide and we recommend the tour highly as an introduction to the varied and delicious cuisine of Japan. Thank you so much, Phoebe.

Delicious Tour of Places You Probably Won't Find on Your Own - This tour was AMAZING. It was a fantastic tour and a great introduction to a part of Tokyo I wouldn’t have seen and foods I wouldn’t have known where to try if I hadn’t gone on the tour. I ended up doing it my first day in Tokyo and it was a great way to get out an about and to beat jetlag. Highlights of the tour were everything from a miso sampling, to egg sandwiches in a local park, to meeting a 90+ year old rice cracker maker. And of course sushi! Ken was an excellent tour guide, very knowledgeable, and paced it well. The size of the group (we were 5) was perfect for Tokyo's small spaces. I always love Culinary Backstreets tours and this one was no exception.

Unique experience in Kichijoji - We only had two days in Tokyo but having been on other Culinary Backstreet tours we knew we wanted to spend one day with this tour and we’re so glad we did! Our guide Phoebe was amazing - so full of energy and enthusiasm! We learned so much about the neighborhood we were in, the food we were eating, and Japanese culture in general. Kichijoji was such a cool area and my partner and I agreed that we’d love to spend more time there the next time we’re in the city.

Great experience! - This tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan...our only regret was that we didn't do it earlier on in our trip. We visited lots of places we never would have found on our own, while learning interesting facts about Japanese food and culture. Our guide, Dennis, was super knowledgeable and really fun to talk to. Highly recommend!
