• Archaeological Site of Mystra - Our journey will start at your hotel, preferably in the morning, and in less than two hours, we will arrive at our destination, the castle town of Mystras. The route is breathtaking as we traverse the legendary and tradition-rich mountains of Taygetos, passing through ravines, stone tunnels, caves, and lush forests. Our first photo stop will be in Keadas, where you can see the cliff from which Ancient Spartans would throw their sick newborns to prevent the continuation of defective genes that threatened their proud and perfectionist race. During the trip, you will learn about the foundation of Mystras by William Villehardouin II in the 12th century AD, his defeat by the Byzantine emperors, and the stories of the Katakouzenos and Paleologus families who brought Mystras to its peak in the 13th and 14th centuries AD. You will hear about the long history of wars and the changing conquerors. You will explore the Acropolis of William, which dominates the top of the castle town, walk the narrow streets once trodden by princesses and Byzantine emperors, visit museums filled with elements of daily life, and see monasteries where nuns still live and churches where emperors were crowned. If you’re hungry, remember that you are in Greece, where Mediterranean traditional dishes await you at local restaurants. If not, return to your hotel to enjoy an afternoon swim in the sea.
