Despite the harsh conditions, it is a paradise for monkeys. With no barriers between you and the monkeys, you can observe them up close as they roam freely. - Obuse-machi - Obuse (小布施) is a charming town in northern Nagano Prefecture, known for its picturesque town center. The famous Edo Period woodblock painter Hokusai, best known for “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” spent his later years here with his patron and student, Takai Kozan, a wealthy local merchant and art enthusiast.
Several town highlights are related to the artist and his patron, including the Hokusai Museum, the Takai Kozan Museum, and the painted ceiling of a local temple. Obuse is also renowned for its seasonal produce, especially locally grown chestnuts.
