Highlights
  • Gunkanjima Digital Museum - Gunkanjima (軍艦島) is a small island located about 20 kilometers from Nagasaki Port. Until 1974, the island served as a coal mine, and more than 5000 residents called the 480 meter long, 150 meter wide island home, resulting in the highest population density in history recorded worldwide.

To accommodate so many people in such a small area, every piece of land was built up so that the island came to resemble a massive battleship. In fact, “Gunkanjima” is a nickname that means “battleship island” in Japanese. The island’s formal name is Hashima.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Updated: October 13, 2019
As of September 23, 2019, it is not possible to land on Gunkanjima until further notice because of damage caused to the port facilities by a typhoon. Boat tours to view the island from the water are in operation.

Nagasaki is a beautiful cosmopolitan port city! Unique when compared to other major Japanese cities. - Yoshi is knowledgeable and personable for our Nagasaki tour. Way before our trip, she contacted us about our preference for transportation, lunch, and sightseeing places. We went to five places and spent sufficient time at each location. My favourite was the Dutch Deijima. Yoshi shared about how foreign influence shaped the city and how such influence was spread or intentionally curtailed in Japan at that time. I observed that Nagasaki served as the artery for trade with China, Korea, and Europe. Nagasaki is cosmopolitan, a place rich with history of trade and WWII. We were pleasantly surprised by Nagasaki as the people and atmosphere differ from other major Japanese cities. Yoshi called tour guiding her calling, and you could feel her passion instantly.

Excellent Nagasaki full day experience with Yoshiko Hattori - Hattori Yoshikoさん provided me such a wonderful and memorable experience in Nagasaki! She is fluent in English and very knowledgeable about the history, local food, life in Nagasaki, whatever questions we have, she knows the answer. I didn’t have an itinerary, 全部 Yoshikoさんにお任せしました. I feel that she is a local friend of mine, in addition to the sight seeing, she also taught us how to make 折り紙, and a surprise stop by at 福山雅治’s実家!as a Japanese ドラマ fan, I was thrilled! 色々、芸能人の話をして、すごく楽しかった!運転手さんもとても親切してくれた。本当にありがとうございました!if you want to tour around Nagasaki, ぜひ、Yoshikoさんに会いに来て、Yoshikoさんに任せてください!

Knowledgeable, friendly, and endlessly helpful. - Dear Norah, thank you so much for sharing your love of this beautiful city with my family and I. Your passion is infectious, and Nagasaki has quickly become one of our favourite places in Japan, and we are looking forward to coming back one day and spending more time here! I really appreciated not just your knowledge that you so readily shared, but also your thoughtfulness by looking for options to make my parents more comfortable during their experience.

Great time - We had a great time touring and learning about Nagasaki with Norah (Noriko) our guide. She was a pleasure to be around and has great knowledge of the area. She organized the whole day including a visit to the peace museum. She also arranged a lunch at a fantastic Yakiniku restaurant that the locals like.

Very good guide makes a tour a success. - The atomic bomb museum was quite impactful, as was the visit to Spectacle Bridge. However, after the tourist activities, the quiet lunch in a small soba noodle restaurant was a real pleasure.
