Nagoya History Tour: From Samurai to Toyota

Discover Nagoya’s rich history on a private walking tour, exploring Atsuta Shrine, Nagoya Castle, and Toyota Museum. Uncover Japan’s past and industrial rise.

Duration: 8 hours
Cancellation: 24 hours
Highlights
  • Atsuta Jingu Shrine - Few landmarks in Japan are more fitting to tell the story of Japan’s beginnings than this 1900-year-old shrine. The origins of a nation are often wrapped in myths, and Japan is no exception. While the primary focus at this site is the nation’s beginnings, the guide will also explore the broader historical narrative as we examine monuments linked to significant historical figures.
  • Nagoya Castle - Amidst the turmoil of the warring states in the 16th century, three feudal lords rose to power successively. Notably, all three hailed from Nagoya or its surrounding areas. The last of these lords founded the Tokugawa Shogunate, which governed Japan for nearly three centuries until the late 19th century. Nagoya Castle represents the culmination of the Tokugawa clan’s consolidation of power. The guide will narrate the history, emphasizing the warring states period and the transition to unification in the early 17th century.
  • Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology - Following the fall of the last Shogunate, the new government’s primary focus was on modernization and industrialization, with significant contributions from the private sector. Toyota’s rise from humble beginnings provides insight into Japan’s rapid industrialization success. The guide will explain how Toyota managed to establish itself at a very early stage.
