Wonderful but confronting - It is almost impossible to describe this tour.
It was wonderful but it was also very confronting but also inspirational as well.
Physically it was a little difficult as everyone in our group of seven were in their mid sixties to mid 70s and at times the terrain was steep and slippery and some places you had to climb a little bit so you needed to have very good shoes and grip -one of our party Slipped and went down.
It was devastating and extremely confronting to see how people were living in the Kibera but it was also uplifting to know the people and see their optimism and cheerfulness.
We were very fortunate to visit the school and understand the important work they were doing including housing some 29 orphans.
It was inspirational and called for optimism but also extremely devastating to know that in our world there are still people living like this.
Fantastic tour

Eye Opening & Enlightening - Navigating through Kibera Slums will bring about many emotions. There will be a sense of remorse, mindfulness, immense sadness but there will be glimpses of hope and optimism that come as you engage with children of village. We visited one of the schools that exist within the village. The eyes of children are filled with promise, love and possibilities. We did not get to visit a home in Kibera. We did visit the bone making market, where there were souvenirs/trinkets on sale.
Be mindful that while this is a tour for us, it is home to others. People will be going through their day to day activities. You'll see how another side of people live. Through it all don't miss the resourcefulness, the community, the love that lives in Kibera.
Tips:
- Wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes with strong grips. You'll be walking/ climbing up slippery ground, boards, rocks, etc.
- Be Prepared to GiveBack: The schools use chalk. I wish I thought of it before I went because I could've donated chalk or children's reading books. The children love to read. If you have time to volunteer, inquire about if you will be able to during your visit.
- We were picked up from our hotel, and Kevin was willing to drop us to our next location nearby. If you have another stop after the tour that is nearby, coordinate drop-off with Kevin.
While this is not your typical sightseeing tour, I do highly recommend touring the slums. It shows the reality of how some people live. It will put a lot into perspective for you.

A Must Do Tour in Nairobi - I am so glad I went on this walking tour. It changed my view of the world. As someone who has lived in the poorest parts of several countries and who was the principal on a school in the poorest part of Oakland CA, I thought I knew what poverty looks like. This tour taught me two things: 1) The poorest community I have ever been in is well off by Kibera standards. And 2) even in this staggering poverty many of the people are warm, friendly, kind, generous, and happy.
We were very fortunate to meet Kevin and his cousin Ishmael. They took very good care of us and made us feel completely safe. Our first stop was a school where the children were celebrating October birthdays. It was such a delight to see their happy faces and listen to them singing so enthusiastically. Also, as a retired principle, I was eager to hear from the founder of the school about both the challenges and successes they encounter.
Our next stop was Ishmael's home. There we met his young daughter and his wife. Their home is tiny, making what we think of as small homes seem palatial, but it is clearly a place of love and happiness. Ishmael and his wife are expecting twins in December and we wish the whole family well.
The last stop of the day was a bone workshop where workers take cow bones and turn them into beautiful crafts: necklaces, bracelets, napkin rings keychains, and so much more.
This tour truly was a highlight of my 3 days in Nairobi. I am so grateful that I found Kevin and went with Him and Ishmael to see their community.

Humbling and Insightful - This was such an enlightening tour. I went with 4 other friends and we truly enjoyed Kevin and company taking the time to show us around where they grew up and explaining what is currently going on now. Kevin picked us up from our hotel and was very informative throughout. We met his brother and talked to some of the people in Kibera. My favorite part was meeting the children at their school and seeing the joy they have in learning.
Thanks so much Kevin for providing this opportunity to people and keeping it respectful. The people in Kibera are truly one! Love Vanessa and Co. (from New York).

Educational - Extremely educational.
Kevin takes you places that show the real life of the slum. You also learn the history of the place, get to talk to people who live there and interact with kids at school a little bit.
Recommend 10/10

Unforgettable Kibera Slum Tour with Kevin - I recently had the opportunity to take a tour of the Kibera slum in Nairobi, and it was an experience I will never forget. I was picked up right on time by our guide, Kevin, and joined by two other individuals for the walking tour. From the start, Kevin's knowledge and passion for the community were evident. He provided a detailed account of daily life in Kibera, highlighting the challenges the residents face, the crucial role of charity programs, and the lack of government support, particularly in terms of law enforcement.
During the tour, we visited a local school, Kevin’s brother Ishmael’s house, and met many friendly residents along the way. Every person we encountered was warm and welcoming, making me feel completely at ease. At no point during the tour did I feel unsafe or unwelcome, which speaks volumes about both Kevin's expertise and the spirit of the Kibera community.
After the tour, Kevin went above and beyond by taking me to a fantastic local spot for lunch—Wapek Delicacies (you must go if you can!). He introduced me to the local custom of washing hands before eating and showed me how to enjoy a traditional meal of wet fry tilapia, ugali, and greens, complete with the fish gills!
It was a truly eye-opening and heartwarming experience, and I cannot recommend this tour enough. If you're looking for an authentic and educational experience in Nairobi, this is the one to take. You won’t forget it!
