Nairobi to Chogoria Park Gate (2950 meters)

Chogoria - 0700 Hours: Guests are picked up from their hotel after breakfast and driven to Chogoria Park Gate. The journey takes approximately 4 hours from Nairobi to Chogoria town, where porters and guides are met. From there, the drive continues to the Mt. Kenya forest, reaching Chogoria Park Gate, which is 22 kilometers away. This 29-kilometer journey traverses a motorable dirt road through fertile farmlands, a tropical forest, and a bamboo zone. The first night is spent at the Kenya Wildlife Service campsite at the Park Gate or at Meru Mt. Kenya Lodge, 7 kilometers from the Park Gate.

Chogoria Park Gate to Camp (3,600 meters)

Mount Kenya - After breakfast and organizing the porters’ loads, the ascent up the mountain begins at a comfortable pace. Camping by the Nithi River aids in acclimatization. The 2-hour trek allows ample time to explore the area. Attractions include the Nithi waterfalls, about 100 feet high, accessible by crossing the river and following the trail to the left for around 300 meters. Other points of interest are Lake Ellis at 3500 meters, approximately 3 kilometers to the right of the road head, and Mugi Hill next to the lake. Climbing to the top of Mugi Hill offers a panoramic view of the neighboring flat-topped Giant’s Billiard table. Lunch is enjoyed by the stream banks before ascending the left-hand hillside to the camp at about 3,600 meters, away from the more “touristy” areas.

Nairobi - After breakfast, guests retrace their steps for 15 kilometers downhill through the lush rain and bamboo forests to connect with the 4WD jeep to Chogoria Town. Following lunch in Chogoria, the drive back to Nairobi is undertaken, ready for the next destination.
