Great! - Beautiful walk enhanced by Matt’s entertaining explanations of historical points of interest along the trail. A delicious lunch at a restaurant and another stop at a tea house along the walk made the day even more enjoyable.

Great guide on Nakasendo Trail - Matt was an excellent guide! He emailed ahead of time to confirm details and expectations. He was on time and his English was excellent-probably because he had lived in the US and Europe for a number of years. Matt was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the trail as well as many other subjects so our tour was very interesting! Matt was a great guide!

Fantastic tour guide and a great hidden gem to explore! - We had an amazing time hiking on the Nakasendo Trail from Megome to Tsumago. It was a great day weather wise and our tour guide (Enomoto “Matt” Masatake) was really fantastic. He is very knowledgeable and clearly enjoys sharing details about this hiking trail with tourists — including lots of historical information about the trail, the surrounding community, and the locals who live and work there. I learned that the chef who prepared our lunch received an award for making outstanding soba noodles — and it was nice to be able to congratulate him! Personal touches like these made our tour so much more enjoyable than simple facts and figures about trail and terrain. I hope Matt will be available in the future for other informative tours of Japan beyond this particular segment.

We'd love to come back! - We had a wonderful experience on this hike! My friends and I highly recommend getting Enomoto Masatake or "Matt" as your guide. The trail is good for beginners and people who are not very active or sporty like me. It's our first time to hike in the snow and Matt was very patient with us, even if we were falling behind on schedule due to our photos and careful walking. He told us stories and answered our curious questions. He also takes good photos! The hike is generally downhill. Some parts of the hike had detours because of landslides or construction (at least 2). I also appreciated that he was able to ask a restaurant to open for us even if they were usually closed during this season. The food was healthy and tasty, run by a kind and warm couple :) We would love to do this again :)

One for the books! - I highly recommend this tour and getting Enomoto Masatake or "Matt" as your guide -- a patient and humblebilingual guide that has his own stories to tell as you walk the Magome-Tsumago trail. Weeks before this tour, he coordinated with our group about must-bring items (e.g., crampons) prior to our arrival in Japan, and he even arranged for our brunch in a lovely mom-and-pop restaurant that serves wonderful farm-to-table japanese food (i.e., We later saw the farm where our food was grown!). He was patient with our group of novice trekkers, some of whom were hiking for the first time. Prepared from start to finish, he made sure that we got to learn about the samurai lore and the community in these mountains. Domo arigato gozaimasu, Matt!

Don’t miss tours of preserved towns! - The hike was on a beautiful trail. My guide was very knowledgeable. I came in not knowing anything about this trail, other than there would be preserved towns to look at, but my guide educating me on its history made me want to learn more about the history of daimyos and this trail and the movement to preserve these places and visit others! He also recommended some delicious chestnut flavored ice cream, which I enjoyed very much.

The Nakasendo Road A must see when in Nagoya - Satomi Otsuka was an excellent guide for private our. We met up on time at 8:40 am at the Tourist Information center in the Nagoya Train Station. We took the train to Nakatsugawa and from there a bus to Magome machi then from there it's a walk to Tsumnago Machi. Weather was unusually warm for April. Satomi was very astute and perceptive on our needs and questions. Spoke perfect English and provided us with an education on the history and culture of the Aichi and Gifu region. The tour started at 9 am and ended at 5 pm. Satomi introduced us to an excellent "Unagi- Fresh water eel" restaurant, Binjyo in the mall under the Nagoya Station upon our return before we boarded the Shinkansen back to our hotel in Shinagawa which took about 2 hours. We have made a new friend in Nagoya and will continue to keep in touch as we visit again or when she visits with her family to Hawaii. Tips- Give yourself time to enjoy and not rush through the experience. Bring a backpack with a water bottle, although there are many shops that sell water, coffee, tea and sake. Also ice cream and all kinds of snacks. If looking for" omiyage" or souvenir gifts to take home, leave some room in your backpack or bring along a foldable shopping bag. Bring a bag for trash since trash cans in Japan are very few and far in between. Hold onto your trash until you get to a store or train station to dispose of it. Above all, wear comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes. A foldable walking stick will also help. There are some inclines along the trail but not too steep,. The entire walk is about 8 kilometers or 5 miles. The scenery is fantastic and take a lot of photos. There are many restroom stops along the way. Bring your handkerchief or small towel as most restrooms do not have towels. Hand wipes are also good to have. Above all, relax and enjoy the experience. Aloha Honolulu, Hawaii
