Highlights
  • Napier Municipal Theatre - The Municipal Theatre was originally intended to be built at Clive Square, but public petitions caused it to be built upon its present site.
Most of the buildings in the centre of Napier were built with brick but the lime and mortar mix that was used failed badly during the quake. The theatre was destroyed in the earthquake and re-built in 1938.

  • Waiapu Anglican Cathedral, Napier, New Zealand - The first stone of the cathedral was laid in 1886 and was built following a traditional English design, being completed in 1888. Whilst communion was being held on the 3rd of February 1931 the building was completely destroyed, killing one person. For the next 25 years a temporary wooden cathedral was used until the present structure was completed in 1965 and now stands as a living memorial to those who rebuilt the city after the earthquake.

Worth doing to learn about the earthquake and fire damage in 1931 and the resilience of the people - Great concept. Enjoyed the short walking tour. App was a little clunky at times but got it sorted. Would have liked a bit more signage and pics along the trail but very informative.

This tour was very informative and... -
This tour was very informative and easy to follow on our mobile phone download. We had a lovely day to walk about this very quaint and friendly town. The narrative on the tour was interesting and we loved being able to do it at our own speed, stopping at the various points of interest and listening to the comments while we took pictures and looked over the various buildings. A very inexpensive way to learn about the history of the Art Deco evolution following the earthquake. Another plus is that the narrative we still have can easily be matched to our pictures in our photographic record of our tour. We enjoyed it very much!
