- Mt. Fuji 5th Station - Arrive at Mt. Fuji 5th Station
Travel to Mt. Fuji 5th Station, weather permitting. Delight in the panoramic views and capture memorable photos; a shrine is also available for visits. Mount Fuji (富士山, Fujisan), standing at 3776 meters, is Japan’s tallest mountain. Its nearly perfect volcanic shape has been revered as a sacred site and has gained immense popularity among artists and the general public over the centuries.
Mount Fuji is an active volcano, with its last eruption occurring in 1707. It is located on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures and is visible from Tokyo and Yokohama on clear days.
- Fujisan World Heritage Center (Mt. Fuji World Heritage Center) - The Fujisan World Heritage Center (富士世界遺産センター, Fuji Sekiisan Center) serves as an information hub for travelers to Mount Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes. It comprises two halls: the North Hall and the South Hall.
The South Hall offers a visual introduction to Mount Fuji with films and a 15-meter-wide model of the mountain crafted from washi paper. Various exhibits highlight the mountain’s cultural significance and its seismology. Visitors can enhance their experience with free augmented reality handsets that bring some exhibits to life.
The North Hall provides an information desk with details on climbing, weather conditions, and tourist attractions around the mountain and Yamanashi Prefecture.
- Lake Kawaguchi Ohashi Bridge - Lake Kawaguchiko (河口湖) is the most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes. A hot spring resort town with numerous tourist attractions and views of Mount Fuji is situated at the lake’s eastern end, while the northern and western shores remain largely undeveloped.
The most stunning views of Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from the lake’s northern shores, especially during the cherry blossom season in mid-April and the autumn colors in early November. A prime spot for cherry blossoms is the lakeside promenade near the Kawaguchiko Music Forest, while photographers will appreciate the “Momiji Tunnel” for its autumn colors, a maple tree-lined road section further west.
- Oshino Hakkai - Oshino Hakkai (忍野八海) is a popular set of eight ponds in Oshino, a small village in the Fuji Five Lake region, located between Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Yamanakako on the site of a former sixth lake that dried up several hundred years ago. The eight ponds are fed by snowmelt from the slopes of nearby Mount Fuji, filtering through porous lava layers for over 80 years, resulting in exceptionally clear spring water cherished by locals.
Next to one pond, visitors can drink the refreshing water directly from the source. The ponds are quite deep, featuring fascinating freshwater plant life and large fish. Although developed into tourist attractions and often crowded, they maintain a pleasant atmosphere if one does not expect untouched nature.
Some vendors operate small outdoor grills, enticing shoppers with the delightful aromas of roasted sweet potatoes and toasted rice crackers.
