- Hill of Tara - Once the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland, the Hill of Tara now features a series of Neolithic burial mounds and tombs that offer breathtaking views across County Meath. As one of Ireland’s most historic and mythical locations, visiting this beautiful area promises an enlightening experience. Visitors can explore the archaeological sites, enjoy the stunning views of the Mourne Mountains, and learn about Celtic rituals dating back to early Christianity.
- Hill of Slane - Situated in County Meath, this site holds historical significance for both its ancient and Christian heritage. It is linked to Sláine mac Dela, a legendary Fir Bolg king believed to be buried there. Its importance grew in the early 5th century when Saint Patrick reportedly lit a Paschal fire on the hill, challenging the pagan High King of Tara and marking the introduction of Christianity to Ireland. The hill later became home to a monastery founded by St. Erc, with remains of a church and tower still present. Today, it stands as a symbol of Ireland’s religious and cultural history.
- Bective Abbey - Established in 1147 in County Meath, this site is a well-preserved Cistercian monastery. Renowned for its picturesque ruins, including a cloister and chapter house, it offers a glimpse into medieval monastic life. The abbey’s serene setting and historical importance make it a popular destination for visitors and history enthusiasts.
- Trim Castle - Few places in Ireland boast more medieval buildings than the heritage town of Trim, once the medieval capital of Ireland. Trim Castle is the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, featuring a monumental three-story keep and a 20-sided tower, making it a remarkable symbol of Norman grandeur. Hugh de Lacy and his successors took 30 years to construct it. The castle is also known as King John’s Castle, as he preferred to stay in his tent on the opposite side of the river during his visit. Today, visitors can view the interior of the keep via modern walkways that wind through this expansive castle. Other medieval sites in Trim include St. Mary’s Abbey, a Franciscan abbey built in 1368, and Ireland’s oldest bridge, standing strong since the early 13th century.
Admission tickets to Trim Castle cost €5 and can be purchased upon arrival.
